WAG switch leap at what level?

Very interesting. I always competed split change on both floor and beam from level 6 onwards (late 90's early 2000s) as they were better than my normal split leaps! They still are and I don't train either. That little bit of extra power from the swing makes a whole lot of difference :)

Coaches What's Normal to be reimbursed for...

I've found it pretty appalling what I have been paid over the last 6 years of coaching and there is no way I would ever try and make gymnastics coaching a career as a result. Hourly rate with no minimum (1 hr class = 1 hr pay), not paid for admin hours but spend lots of my own time preparing for...

WAG max strength vs endurance - is it the same?

I'll answer you question below to the best of my knowledge. 1.) I was wondering if there was a big difference between maximal leg strength and explosive power? Is someone who can do single leg squats also good at jumping and explosiveness and vice versa? No, it's different. Different muscle...

WAG "gymnastics is for little ones" ?! your opinion

*NERD ALERT!!!! ^^ Really it's all physics. A girl weighing 50 Ib would have to pull up 50 and therefore requires less 'strength' to do so when comparing a 120 Ib one. The load is larger for the heavier girl. The same goes for leg lifts except the difference in weight would be smaller due to the...

    WAG Commonwealth Games 2014!

Can someone give an update on the standings/ scores for the womens artistic? I really wish I could watch it but alas have to head to Uni for the whole day! So bummed its in the middle of the night here and I don't have time to watch any replays today.

    WAG Beach training?

Beach training for fitness wouldn't be a bad idea and definitely keep things interesting :) It would also have the added bonus of offering a bit of prehab work for the lower limbs particularly the ankle joint due to the unstable nature of the sand. Assuming none of the gymnasts have an acute...

WAG Why do gymnasts train 365 days a week?

Since completing my degree, I have always wondered about this 'year around' training that gymnasts do. Recovery is such an important component of building strength and endurance as it is these times that the body repairs, adapts and therefore gains occur. A gym that is not factoring down weeks...

    Coaches Teaching Valdez

Thanks for your reply. I definitely think it has to do with their strength and power as their dance teacher told me the other day they all struggle with their split leaps due to this reason. She now has them working more power drills. The issue is that I have no access to equipment other than...

    Coaches Teaching Valdez

Hi All , I've been asked to teach a valdez (walkover from seated position) to a group of dancers. I was wondering if anyone has some drills or advice on how to teach this? The girls all have their walkovers and bridge kickovers but are struggling to do one smooth movement when completing from...

Why do you love it? What do you hate?

I love they crazy things I get to learn to do. I love the adrenaline rush for doing said crazy things. I love being fit, strong and flexible. I chose gymnastics as it's fun, develops all of the above while learning cool tricks! I just love every moment now that I'm doing any form of gymnastics...

    Australian Gymnastics nationals live streaming

They posted that in Facebook and I meant to watch it but somehow forgot at the time! Was too busy doing Uni work and then taking the dog for a walk. If it's on tomorrow I might try to see some then. I'm itching for the commonwealth games to start so I can see some gymnastics action. Hopefully...

WAG Why do they place all the way out?

In Australia in the 90's and early 00's most comps only gave out places 1-3 (very very occasionally to 6th). There were many comps that I cam home with nothing or just a card with my scores on them. Only our coaches were given our placements. I like now that in the comps now they give up to 6th...

Off Topic School times & Summer Break

^^^ I'm so confused by the different names for the same things in different states. I've grown up in NSW, was confused by my housemate who grew up in QLD. She finished school a year earlier than me even though we are the same age as Queensland used to have one year less schooling than NSW. I now...

    WAG Bouncing in oversplits

Ballistic stretching (bouncing) is now very outdated and seen to cause more damage than good causing a loss in flexibility rather than a gain. This is due to the over stretching and tearing of muscle fibers over and over producing bits of scar tissue in the muscle. This is hard and cannot be...
