Here's a nice article that ESPN just put out. I think it hits the nail on the head.

I have 2 questions that come to mind.

1. What is the exact process that has to happen in order to change the Code of Points?

2. I know a lot of people had issues with and opinions on Marta karolyi being too hard and overtraining the US women, well now that they won, does the opinion remain the same?

joking aside, Grandi is now aware that EVERYONE in gymnastics is so angry that the tea party folks look like cupcakes compared to the emails he has received from the coaching cummunity and NGB's.

to the 2nd, i wish everyone would get off the marta stuff. it's the code...not marta.

So do you think the fact that everyone is finally angry that something will be done? Also, is the pressure for change coming from all countries? Do you think countries such as Romania, China, Russia are also seeking changes to the Code?

And I don't have enough info to have a personal opinion on the whole Marta issue. I am simply going off what I have read on several sites.

yes...from other countries. every country can't field a full healthy team because if this code. the injuries in the last 5 years are really quite catastrophic to our sport.

and everyone can keep blaming marta. i have 1st hand experience with all this. it's not her. because if it is, then the worldwide injuries are the fault of ALL the other NTC's in their respective countries. it's not marta...it's the code.

I am glad that all countries are on board with making changes at least. I wonder then, why they need the Code to change. If everyone knows it's wrong, then why can't everyone agree to stop making young gyumnasts attempt the hard skills that are getting them injured. Why not say, as a collective, we are no longe going to do x, y, and z skills because they are too dangerous.

Perhaps that is simplistic of me, but if everyone really is on the same page except for the governing body, then you would think there would be a strength of influence.

Someone is ALWAYS going to cheat this. We've already seen countries are more than willing to lie about age (China, Korea's Kim Gwang Suk who was 16 for like 3 years). It's so much easier to teach these big skills to a kid who hasn't hit puberty in the case of the women (girls).

I think it's more naive to think that everyone is on the same page in actually caring about the safety of the gymnasts. I think in some of these more strict countries it is ALL about winning and if you hurt a girl in the process, oh well... Maybe it's the judgmental cynic in me, but I can't believe that any country who moves a 5-7 year old child away from their family and only lets them visit a few times a year in the effort of training gives a flying fig about what is in the best interest of the child.

Hey Sharks, I see your point about not caring about the child, but in reality if things continue in this direction they will run out of children to break. It's bad for the sport, it's bad for the industry.

Dunno, I'm sure it's darn hard, but it's been done before- that's how we got this mess.

We've subjugated the elegance to the athleticism, next stop is an outright freak show. Gymnastics will have to move from the Olympics to the X-Games.

what was meant was in response to Sharks. i don't think the entire elite community will just boycott or dumb down the code on its own for the purpose of constructing routines.

grandi has to actually get off his high horse and change it back to what it was. i don't care about the 10.0 issue, just the difficulty issue.

and i agree with you on the x-games mentality. parkour & freerunning have already killed lots of kids.

So here is the million dollar question Dunno, how would you fix it... How do you balance having a code of points that rewards innovation, artistry, technical/acrobatic superiority and addresses the injury issues?

I could sit here and argue the merits for days on both the old and new scoring systems and still end up hating both :)

I think there needs to be more incentive for the gymnasts to complete clean, simple routines. Is it completely beyond the realms of possibility for a huge bonus for a gymnast who on average gets less than say 1.5 deductions on each apparatus?!

In gb there is already a cap on skills that can be competed at certain ages. No tsuks at age 9 for example, no Double saltos until age 11. Doesn't stop them from being taught though!
