So as some of you may have noticed, I recently moved up to level 5 team after over a year of waiting in rec classes. I am, of course, ecstatic about this. But I am the fifth in a group of four (not entirely motivated) girls who are uptraining level 6 skills so they can move up in the fall.

As much as I hate to admit it, while I do have a front tuck and front handspring step out to front handspring on floor, I'm not really ready for any other level 6 skills (though I sometimes work on back tucks). I can't go over the vault on my own. My kips still need (LOTS of) time to solidify. I feel like I'm kind of teetering on the edge, not really part of what's going on. :( The coaches don't really know what to do with me; they basically send me off to do 10 of whatever and 5 something or other by myself (with almost NO corrections or input of any sort, I might add). Then when I finish and come back, they kind of get a confused look on their face, like "oh crap I can't think of anything to tell her to do". On top of that, the current coach is such a joke, I have trouble believing she's going to still be around by next year (thank goodness).

I am considering practicing with the level 4 team instead, since they'll be uptraining level 5 skills so they can move up in the fall. They have a really good coach, too, I like her a lot more then the idiot coaching level 5 at the moment. I'm praying she'll choose to coach the higher levels as well. Anyway, there are also some level 5s who practice with the level 4s because they are used to their coach and it's pretty much the same hours and conditioning (in fact, the level 4 coach gives harder conditioning assignments then level 5 coach. Ridiculous the way it works, isn't it?). So I would probably be in the right place regarding my abilities. Some of the level 4s seem to be a bit catty about strangers (I practiced with them a few weeks ago when my usual group didn't up. They kept muttering about how short they felt now that I existed) but I can deal with cattiness.

Unfortunately, I would only be able to practice with them on Saturdays because their other times are bad for me. They do Tuesdays, Fridays & Saturdays while I do Mondays, Thursdays & Saturdays. I have a commitment on Tuesdays and going M, F&S would be just weird. However, the schedule changes after school lets out, so I might be able to completely switch over then. My Mom is going to talk to them about Saturdays ASAP.

What is your take on my situation? Am I making the right decision? Thank you for reading my novel. :o

Hi there...your "novel" is well thought out and you are clearly very intuitive in regards to your coaching situation and very mature in regards to training with littler than you level 4 girls. You have given this a LOT of thought, and I believe you are absolutely making a great decision...YES...work with the coaches that seem to have it together, and with girls who are closer to your skill level. You are a smart girl, go with your gut on this one!

ME? just a gymmie mom...but I have seen this before, it hit home with me..my DD in a similar situation without as many options as you seem to have. GOOD LUCK..and don't quit gym because of this..you sound so hard working that any coach should love to have you!

I agree. You have thought this out now bring those thoughts to your coaches. If your going to do L5 in the fall you should be training with others who are going to do the same.

You've received a lot of good advice, but I just want to add one more thing...

Give it a little time. How long have you been working out with this new group of girls? It's always hard when you move up into a new group. But your gym saw something in you that made them think you could handle this situation.

Certainly talk to the coaches (and to your mom) about options, but also remember that it will get better and easier with time.
