My son has been dealing with a stubborn painful wrist injury. We have been to many doctors, hand specialists, orthos, pediatric sports specialits...you name it! MRI's, xrays, ultrasounds etc.

Surgery is out of the question because the fracture is too close to a growth plate. The doctors said there is nothing more they can do at this point and that if he wasnt into 'gymnastics' it would be a non issue. The fracture is a 'slow healing' one on the ulnar bump on the pinky side. Only way to fix it is to stop doing gymnastics for an extended period of time, stop using his HANDS!!!

He has insisted on going to practice. But he goes, and cant do anything without pain. So there is no point for him to go for 30 hrs in the summer. I think it would be dangerous really.

He is 12. and I told him he CAN go back, that he does not HAVE to quit. Why do gymnasts think that by taking time off, it is the end?? Pleanty of injured gymnasts come back. I guess the fear is that MORE gymnast don't ever come back.

In the meantime, i must find other sports for the summer, swimming, flag football, jr. lifeguard camp etc. I will use it as an opportunity to try new things while he is away.
He can still go for basic conditioning a few times a week. this way he wont be cut off so abruptly.

Any other suggestions for sports??? When I ask camps, 'how much conditioing is involved with this sport' they look at me like i am crazy!

Not a fear...a fact...most don't come back.

My daughter has a similar injury that forces retirement. She has become a star in soccer at the ripe age of 13 and only having playing for 2 seasons now.

If he wants to stay in shape I would suggest swim team.

I think he has probably seen it happen ot other boys. Our coach says that once boys discover the world outside the gym, most don't come back. And experience backs that up. HOwever, some do. SOme have that dirve and dedication to make the comeback! If he really loves it, he will make it back. Maybe once a week or so he can go in and condition (that is whay my son is doing for the most part right now). Injuries are so frustrating aren't they?

If he really wants to come back, he'll be able to come back. We had a couple of guys come back after long layoffs. I like the idea of having him come in and condition on a regular schedule if he wants to do that. Other than that, I think swimming would be great.

Reassure him that if he does really want to come back, he will regain his lost skills very quickly once he's able to work out again in full health and without pain. If he takes the summer off and heals completely and comes back in the fall, by next summer he'll be way ahead of where he is now.

Thanks profmom,
I think he will be OK....In the end, I want him to be happy in any activity he chooses. He is very convinced he is a 'gymnast' and he is prepared to take swimming, and trampoline as his coach suggested. We have assured him that the skills are in his head, and he wont LOOSE them completely....He will have to get his body back in shape and then practice hard. We told him that anything is possible if he is HEALED!! But if he is hurt, he cant catch up....
Right now, focus on staying in shape, condition, stretch and use the summer to get OUTSIDE!!!
