 Ok we are at meet #7 last night and I have to say 9.anything was a rare site. This year I don't know if its just me or what but the judging seems extra hard this year. Heck my DD came in 3rd on beam with a whopping 7.65
I ended up asking the mom next to me if the score I recorded down was the same one she wrote down and it was.

Who places in the top 3 with a score like that??? The top 10 seem to be in the High 7's - Low 8's. Boy I'll tell you alot of girls are being surprised with placements and low scores.

Anyone else seeing crazy low scores that wouldn't have seen the podium last year but are in the top 5 this year?

Anyone have any ideas why they are harder this year? I'm thinking with the new routines starting next year they are more aware of mistakes or something. Either that or those early morning and last routines of the day groups the judges need more coffee.

The scoring seems lower here but that seems to be the norm all the time. You still see some 9's but very rarely see AA scores above 36 something. I sat at my first boy's meet yesterday next to a family from another state and they even commented that the scores they were seeing here would never make the podium where they were from. They also noted that their son always scores better than he did here. (I think they were from Arkansas).

I went to a couple of HS meets this season and I thought the same thing...that the scoring was low for a HS meet but not necessarily for what they were actually doing ...I always thought that HS was judged a little looser than USAG but not this year as we're seeing a lot of 7s on the podium.

That's funny you say that. There were a lot of comments floating around the parents yesterday at the meet that the judges seemed to be scoring tougher than usual. Lot's of 7s on the podium, hardly any nines. This is my first year, so I can't really give my opinion, but the other parents were discussing it.

She is competing L7 with some L8 components. the judging I'm seeing as tough is the USAG one. The HS seems to be about average I'm told as this is our frist year with the HS gymnastics.

She is competing both

When I took the judging course for HS , the instructors basically said that HS is judged based on L8-9 rules BUT she also said you don't want to ding the girls too bad on scores because you want them to come back! It was almost like they said to you "if you think a routine is a 7.5 in USAG, you have to go back and look to where you could up the score a bit"....Basically it was recognition that HS competitors aren't doing USAG and should not be judged as harshly....
