Curious -- does it help a boy's chances at all (all else being equal) if he's a strong candidate for a straight up academic scholarship?

Definitely. Even if he's not getting money, strong academics help. Coaches want to keep their team's GPA up.

ANd from what i hear, athletic departments like to use sports like MAG to boost up the athletic GPA for the school......
