Hi everyone! Long time lurker (at least it feels like it) first time poster. I've learned so much from you all, and I really appreciate it. (Although I don't want to make Dunno mad! ;) )

I was reading about "scoring out", & I was confused to learn that move-ups seem to be based on how someone did the current level, & not the training up after the season.

My DD is preparing for move up testing into Level 6. She had a great level 5 season, but failed to move up to level 6 because she didn't have all of the required skills. However, she can do most of the Level 6 skills now, and failed her BHS on low beam, monkey circle on Bars, & Giants on the strap bar.

She's getting another chance to test again at the end of the month, but she has to re-test everything - even the skills that she excelled on at the first test 3 weeks ago.

Is this normal? She was disappointed that she didn't move up on the first try, but I believe will be devastated if she doesn't move up at all this year.

Every gym has a different policy, so it is difficult to determine what is "normal." For instance, out gym moves people up in the spring to the level they will be competing in the fall based on three criteria: 1) They need to have at least 80% of the required skills. 2) they need to be "coachable." and 3) they need to have performed well at the previous level, with no "stage fright" or confidence issues.
This is the criteria for compulsory move ups at out gym. It differs for optional levels and from gym to gym. Your best bet would be to ask for clarification directly from your head coach. Good luck to you and your daughter!

It really does vary by gym. Our gym doesn't require you to have the skills of the next level before moving up (but if you don't have them by competition time, you won't be competing the events that you lack in). They also don't do a testing day like your gym does--instead the coaches just evaluate based on what the girls have done in practice and at meets.

As with everything else, every gym is different in how they handle move ups. Dd's gym makes decisions at the end of summer to solidify the school year schedule. But since they don't start competing until January, the girls may not have all their skills mastered for that next level when the decision is made, though that is the goal. I'm guessing the hc decides based on work ethic and the potential to master them by meet season.

As for using a score to move up, I think most of the time it is two-pronged. You have to score a certain value to show you have mastered competition at that level. And then you also have to show that you have Tue skills for the next level - or the potential to get them.

I'm a little confused by your post though. Are you saying she's a L5 this year and they won't move her up to L6 unless she has her giants and bhs on beam? If so, that sounds a little extreme to me. She has an entire yr before needing to compete them. I understand requiring mastery of the skills needed for the level you ate loving into, but not the next level up....

almost every gym has a different criteria for moving up the ladder. sometimes i understand the rhyme and reason and sometimes i don't. mostly, you've got groups of kids at all levels. and those kids are broken down in to work groups all doing nearly the same stuff. it makes it difficult when, for example, you have 3 kids in a group with giants and the commensurate skills that go along with giants, and then 2 kids still in strap bar. so a lot of times, it is these groups that dictate who gets moved when and in to new groups. this makes sense to me due to my experience with the logistics of running a gym with teams. hope this makes sense to you.:)

At my daughter's gym they have a complete list of skills all girls must test on before being considered for promotion to the next level. Some of the skills are odd (like the aerial and bhs on beam for L6). Obviously you don't need these skills but you have to test them anyway.

Then when you move to L7 you are re-tested on some skills. The full turn for example. Even though they competed it for the L6 season they must show they've retained the skill. Same for vault (been doing it since L5) but you are retested on it for L7 but at a higher horse height. Our girls must also show proficiency with trampoline skills which we all find odd, but the gym seems to know what they are doing.

Anyhow it definitely isn't out of the norm, what your gym is doing and I have seen lots of girls not move up for just 1 or 2 lacking skills. Especially at gyms where space is in issue at certain or all levels.
