Today I was on my last event of the day, floor, and was warming up my tumbling. I did a front handspring front tuck, and went a little higher than usual. I opened up too soon, and sort of "kicked" the ground and badly hyper-extended my knee. After crying and icing it down, gym was over. So my coach told my dad that it'll probably be sore for a few days, and to keep it mellow. But he also told my dad that if it starts to swell that I should go to the doctor via the ER. That was 4 1/2 hours ago, and my knee doesn't hurt that bad, but I can't walk on it that well. When I straighten it my knee really hurts. It is a bit swollen, but I'm not sure what to do. My coach told me to go to the doctor if it swelled at all, but I don't know! I don't even know what could be wrong if it swells! Please help me! I'm so confused!

-GCG (who has an ice pack under her knee... yay...)

ouch! im sorry. thats happend to me before. i hope it gets better soon:)

Do this Rest , Ice, Compress, Elevate. This is known as RICE, it will help you a lot. If when you wake up in the morning, or you don't sleep due to pain, go to the ER and get it looked at. It is a very common injury, but you have to take care of it. Even if it is a bit better in the morning you really have to take it easy as training on it too soon will cause more problems down the roa.

Good luck with this, my gymmie has gone through this and I know how painful it is.

I hope it heals quickly! Be honest with your parents and coaches about how it feels so you don't re-injure it and take Bog's advice!

If it still hasn't gotten better, I would go get it looked at it. I've seen people with pretty bad knee injuries that didn't have severe swelling - it's not the only indicator or just could be more mild on you right now. Feeling like you have no control over it is what concerns me, could be possible ligament damage. Don't try to bend it too much or force it into any positions.

the best advice would be to follow bogwoppit's advice and dont do any gym until you feel ready too. Hope It heals soon! :rotfl: :)

I tore my anterior cruciate ligament in training and initially it didn't really swell even though swelling is a very common symptom. The instability was my main issue and the ligaments are very precious so if it doesnt get better I would definitely get it checked out. Also I had the pain on straightening the leg! Get it checked out and DO NOT overwork it. You need to let it heal or it never will!

Flippinlolly, my leg sounds kind of like what you explained, only it's not that painful any more. Like you said, it hurts when I straighten it, and sometimes when I'm walking it involuntarily shifts quickly from straight/hyperextended to normal.

you should be all good. b careful and dont put to much weight and pressure on it. keep icing it and do that for 3 weeks after that iff it still hurts something is so wrong with it. if that happens go to the doc ASAp. Ice everytime after you eat a major meal and three weeks like i said and you should be aalll goood and back to the gym

The same thing happened to me. I was doing a front tuck step out and bang!
I went to the Dr. and they gave me crutches. It will get better in a few days.
Hope you feel better!
