This is my dd's 4th year competing. She is 10. She competed USAG 2(36.5), 3(36.1), Silver(37.8), and now Gold. She is very strong. I believe that has greatly contributed to the issue she has. She has always struggled with pointed toes and bent legs. Even with locked knees her legs look bent. Toes have improved immensely over the years, but she still looses control at times. We eliminated tight hamstrings as a cause. Then last night, I noticed that she didn't seem to be using her calves. I asked her about it. She told me that she never feels her calf muscles. I guided her through making the connection. Sitting on the floor with her legs extended in front of her she tried again to straighten. For the the first time her heel lifted up though only slightly. And, I could see her calf flexing as she did. Now she says she can't stop feeling them. She was very surprised at how much easier it is to bounce her leg. 10 year old priorities...lol I was shocked that all this time in gymnastics, she has been relying on her other muscles. She jumps with her thighs and uses muscles in her foot and ankles to control her point/foot. I rewatched a recent floor routine. I can see that she is letting her feet drop to a point rather than pushing through her toes before a front tuck. I'm curious to know if others have experienced this. Any advice? Also, any info on what we can expect going forward?
