Where to work?

I've written in the gym management forum, but with changes to the story, I thought I'd post it here and get other people's opinions. At first I thought I was going to be able to buy a gym that is already open, but the owners changed their minds. Then I thought I'd be able to open a new gym with the help of a very generous investor. But now she tells me she can only help pay for part of it, not the whole thing. So we'd have to come up with the rest of the money some other way. I wanted to get this done as quickly as possible because there are girls at a nearby gym that can't go any farther with their current coach, and their parents have expressed a lot of interest in moving them to this potential new gym. I know I can help them, and I really want to. But now it might take a long time to get a gym up and running. I have another option. There is a gym about an hour away hiring for a team program director, which is exactly the title I would want. But I don't know the area or the girls. It would enable me to go back to school at the same time, but I'm not sure if thats what I want right now either.

So, I either wait around to make my dream of running a gym come true, not knowing when or if it will happen, or I take a job doing what I love but not where I want to be. I'm very conflicted.

is there any reason why you wouldn't be able to persue owning your own business if you took the position of team director at this gym that's an hour away? That way, you would get to do what you love in the interim...

I like the idea of trying to do both. It will take a while for the gym to open, I'm sure, and I'll need something to do while its still being planned. I know I should finish school too, was just hoping I didn't need to.

Take the team program director position and go back to school. I don't know anyone who has ever said "I wish I didn't finish school," but I know plenty who wish they had finished. While having a degree may not guarantee you a job or success, not having one closes many doors. And taking the team program director position will give you the opportunity to be more involved with the business side of things and give you a feel for running a full program.

I think some of the most successful gyms really integrate themselves in the local economy, so from that side going back to school, if you could get in a business program, might allow you to make general contacts and learn more about the local and state business community, business regulatory climate in your state, etc. This could be a good thing.

Also the director position would probably allow you to do more specific networking.
