Can anyone tell me roughly how many hours per week a gymnast should train? Levels 1 through to 6. My daughters gym doesn't seem to do many hours so was wondering what other gyms do. Thanks

Our gym does 4 hours per week for levels 1 & 2 (these are our pre-team levels) and 9 hours per week for level 3 (our 1st competitive level). I believe our level 4 does 12 hour per week but my DD is level 3 so I'm not sure about that since we're not there yet.

Pre team 2-4 hours depending on age
Level 3: 4-6
Level 4: 6-8
Level 5: 8-12
Level 6+: 15

These are based on memory I know all of our optionals top out at 15 during the school year. Level 5's might be 10-15. They have an optional practice for each of the levels hence the range

Developmental: 3 hours
Pre-team: 3 1/2 hours
Level 2: 6 hours
Level 3: 10 hours
Level 4: 14 3/4 hours
Levels 5 and 6: 19 1/2 hours
Level 7-10: 22 1/2 hours

We don't compete L1 or 2. They are two 1.5 hour classes per week.
L3/4: 9 hours mandatory with the option for 12. Almost all go 12.
L5/6: 12 hours

Optionals are 16-20 hours

L3: 6hrs
L4/5: 15hrs
L7-10: not entirely sure but more than 15 for sure... If I had to guess I would say 20-22hrs
We don't have lower levels than 3.

Developmental (5 years old) - 5 hours
Preteam (grade 1) - 6 to 9 hours
Preteam (grade 2) - 12 hour
Preteam (grade 3) - 16 hours
Levels 1-4 ages 7+ - 9 to 12 hours
Team - starts age 9, level 5 and 6 - 16 hours
Team - level 7 - up to 20 hours
Team/National - up to 25 hours

Thanks for everyone's replies. It's different for us as they compete in levels 1 and 2 here. The hours are still less then everyone else seems to train though. Not sure if I should talk to the coach about it or not? I don't want to be pushy but having a gymnastics background I remember training harder and longer but I guess it's changed since then.

Average in my area is as follows.

Level 1 - 4 hours
Level 2 - 6-7 hours
Level 3 - 9 hours
Level 4 - 14 hours
Level 5-6 - 16 hours
Level 7-10 - 20 hours

This is in Australia so our levels are one up from yours in the USA now. Our level 4 is the same as your level 3.

Thanks. I'm in Australia too and was getting a bit confused about level comparison. Thanks for clearing that up :)

USA Levels
L3 - 9 hours
L4 - 11 hours
L5-L10 - 16 - 22 hours (some flexibility given to gymnasts)

It's very unusual over here to train that amount of hours. School is tough and in higher grades there will automatically be days with up to 10 hours of school.
I can't tell you an average as it varies very much from club to club and the levels are really different, but the high level developmental girls at the big clubs train around 15 hrs/week. The lowest level teams will typically train 3 or 4 hrs/week, everything else is in between. But as I said, it varies.

Pre-team: 2.5 hours/week
L2: 7.5 - 9 hours/week
L3: 9 - 12 hours/week
L4: 12 - 16 hours/week
L5-7: 16 hours/week
L8-10: 20 hours/week

I think we are lower than many:

pre-team = 4
level 3 = 8.5
level 4/5 = 12.5
level 6/7 = 13
level 8-10 = 18

Level 3-4 8 hours
Level 5- 12
Level 6-7 15.5
Level 8-10 20 plus 3 hour Saturday practice during competition season

USA levels
These were the hours I did in the levels. I'm currently a level 9.

Level 4 (new level 3) - 9-12 Hours (I changed from 9 to 12 part way through the year)
Level 6 (new level 5) - 16 Hours
Level 7 - 16-20 Hours
Level 8 & 9 - 20-23 Hours

Interesting to read-DD's gym is on the high end based on what I'm reading.

Pre-team-2 hours
Level 2-6 hours
Level 3-13 hours
level 4 -18.5 hours
level 5- 7 - 19.5 hours
Level 8-10 - 23.5 hours

Ours is somewhere around:

Level 3 and Xcel: 6 hours

Level 4/5/6: 9-12 hours

Level 7/Optionals: 14-16

I believe that's about right, anyhow.
