Ashton said she's doing elite for a couple more years because her body can't handle all around in college. I wonder if the ability to have 2 specialists in addition to 4 all around will actually keep more girls next Olympics.

I actually hope they will ban Produnova some time soon. They should have done it long time ago. Don't want to see the kind of injury we saw with Samir Ait Said. I think he also did Produnova, didn't he?
(not that I want anyone to google it, I saw it and wish I could unsee it...)

He didn't do a Prudonova, he did a Dragalescu, I believe
I admit I am kind of lost in vault world.
It looked like Produnova to me, front HS entry and then front tucks.
But as I said, I am not good with recognizing vaults and much less so in MAG.

It was a half on entry, double pike back, vs front entry, double tucked forwards. They do look similar because they flip twice, but you can see he twists onto the vault table so that he is facing the vault, then flips backwards with straight legs instead of forwards with tucked legs.

Thanks for explaining!
What kind of vault does Chris Brooks do? Looked very similar to me, too.

Actually sorry. I messed up. The vault he did is not called a Dragalescu. It's what I said it was, 1/2 on double pike off, but I forget the name of it. Brooks does a Prudonova. Sorry for the confusion!

It's actually called a Roche in men's gym, just to make things a little more confusing ;)

Why are some skills called by the same name in mens and womens gymnastics (ie Tkachev)but some different?

Yes only one event at a time.
Thank you! Sorry, I thought since it listed Vault and Bars that maybe there would be two feeds and then when I got on there, there was men's events too. But now I get that they weren't going at the same time. I didn't get to watch it live because I got hit with a migraine like ten minutes in...arrrrr. They start off ocular, so the best thing to do is close my eyes :( Anyway, I saw the replays just now (still not feeling great, but the power of gymnastics is so tempting! Lol) and WOW!! Thanks everyone for all the explanations. Vault is the toughest one for me to understand.

That's an interesting approach....considering NCAA supposedly limits athletes to 20 hours a week of practices etc , whereas elites usually practice 30+ hours. She was committed to Florida and I didn't see her being an all around there to begin with....it doesn't surprise me that she would continue to train for the next Olympics but if I were her, seeing how she got edged out by Kocian who upped her game by training a usable AA for trials, I would make a mental note that that strategy worked...

I think Gabby, if she wants it, will be in the spotlight and be able to largely support herself with those opportunities for some time to come. Like Shawn Johnson, Nastia and others who have become celebrity athletes.
------
She may be done with elite-level comps, but life in tours, appearances, endorsements, maybe announcing (if it fits her), shows like Dancing with the Stars perhaps...are likely still open to her. Even if she ultimately decides the celebrity scene spotlight isn't a fit for her more reserved personality, I hope she continues to be a part of the gymnastics-appearance scene and inspiring little girls and boys with all she has accomplished. ].

With all the talk of Gabby possibly being an introvert (real or fan excuses, or complete bunk...whatever) I wouldn't think that being a commentator at high profile meets/events or even college meets would be a good match for her. Nastia and Shawn have both always been media darlings...knowing how to market themselves to both fans and sponsors and potential employers (the very same media). Gabby has always seemed extremely awkward in media situations and this quad seems no different on that front. If I were a potential employer/sponsor she would be a much bigger risk than hiring Shawn, nastia, kupets, or (if this quad of girls is interested) aly or Simone or even Laurie (even though she's younger she did turn pro and may be looking for opportunities and lord knows she's got a very marketable personality!)

I was pleasantly surprised by Gabby in bars final. I thought she showed real class. It couldn't have been easy. And she has been very hurt by all the social media bullying Re: the award ceremony, I saw an article about it. I wasn't a fan of her and Aly going for repeats - thought they should give other girls a chance - but they both won me over!

But in that case, why are some skills called by the same name? It would make sense that for WAG, it's named after the first woman and in MAG, it's named after the first man, but some like Tkachev and Geinger are the same.

I thought she handled the bar finals quite well also. I'm sure she was upset (who wouldn't be) but that she did well keeping herself composed. I'm not a gabby fan but did want her to do well at finals and was sad for her.....also give credit where credit is due, that save was phenomenal! She fought hard for it.

While I still think that she is uncomfortable (for whatever reason...as I stated above, im not labeling or guessing as to why) with media....and a commentator is probably not a good fit for her, I can see her doing well with scripted lines though. Commercials yes,...live media on her own and coming up with what to say adlib , no. It's always good to know your strengths and weaknesses.....who knows , maybe she'll scrap all media related outlets and go to college and reinvent herself. After all, just because you win a gold medal does NOT mean that you have to do nothing in your life except what is related to your sport ever again. Look to Amy on the 96 team....awesome example !!

For some reason, NBC Primetime showed two Produnovas, but not Hong Un-Jong vaults. For those who didn't get the chance to watch her during live stream:

She really attempted the triple twist, but she didn't completed it and fell, and since her 2nd vault score was showed with 6.3 difficulty, I suppose it was scored as Amanar (so TTY won't be named after her, at least not now.)
