Every meet does it differently. A common method is to order the athletes by birthdate and divide them into equal groups. Youngest 12 kids are Child A, then the next 12 youngest will be Child B and on up to the Juniors and the seniors. In a small meet there might only be two groups: junior and senior. A kid could be a junior one meet and a senior at another meet. I’ve also seen age divisions with 3 kids up to 35 kids! It’s very arbitrary.
