My daughter will be competing level 7 next year. What is the average age for level 7 gymnasts at your gym?

We have a wide range of ages in our gym at pretty much every level. Level 7 has girls 10-16 right now.

Average is probably 5th-6th grade but we have the occasional gymnast younger than that, and occasionally a 7th/8th grader.

So average is probably 10-12, but range is 9-13.

My daughter is 11, just starting level 7 and her team ranges from 10 - 14 years old

My daughter was level 7 last year, her team ranged from 10-15 yrs old.

I think our gym runs older, our L7s were around 13 years, with the youngest being around 10/11 and the oldest being 14/15

We had one L7 this past season and she was 14. The two girls likely moving to L7 next season will be 11 and 13 I believe. Our gym does tend to skew older.

I feel this has shifted to be a bit older with time. My older DD had just turned 9 the day of the first meet of the season when she did level 7 in 2019. The average age for the level at her gym was probably 10, with a pretty small range from 9 (mine + one other girl) to 11. She was a level 10 by 7th grade after choosing to repeat level 8 due to the season being cut short for COVID.

Meanwhile, at the same gym just a few years later, my younger DD did level 7 turned 12 in the middle of the season (2024) and was the average age for the level at her gym (age range 11-13).

I also noticed that at meets, my older DD was always in the youngest age group and often one of the youngest kids. I've been surprised to see that my younger DD who is doing the levels at an older age is never placed in an age group higher than the 2nd youngest, with the exception of states and regionals. That said, I wonder if there is a more universal shift to being a bit older. Maybe this is by default because these kids were slowed down in early levels due to COVID? Either way, I'm thankful for it! I think being a bit older in optionals is much healthier in all aspects. My older DD did 2 years of level 10 before hitting high school and then burnt out and quit!

I think the Covid explanation is real for some geographies. There’s definitely an optionals age gap at our gym due to Covid. We are on the west coast where there were long closures and then strict limits on new girls joining gyms because of limits on group sizes that persisted into fall 2021. This shows in level 6/7, where there are plenty of 8 year olds, but no 9 year olds, a relatively tiny amount of 10 year olds, and more 11/12s than in years past.

We see it in compulsories, too, among girls of average ability. The girls moving up to 4 and 5 are now young again, but for a while those levels were 2-3 years older because those girls were out of the gym in kindergarten or 1st and had to basically start over and scramble to find teams without workout group size limits.

At my daughter's gym there is only a few level 7's, they range in age 13-15.
