i have recently turned 15 and i’ve been in gymnastics since i was 7 but i haven’t been since i was 11 because i got rejected from a competitive team because i was shy and that really discouraged me.

i can still do most of my skills except the splits and a backhandspring, which is the hardest thing i could do (i can do a backhandspring step out kind of but ive always had poor form on my backhandspring)

i really want to do a backtuck because 1. i want to make it onto a competitive team 2. i just want a party trick and 3. i made a video on wanting to do a backflip and i just got hated on and got a bunch of “skill issue” comments
i don’t know if my very limited gymnastics ability is stopping me

i tried doing a backflip on a trampoline but i got scared of going high and rotating and i fell on my back even though i know what im meant to do (not throw my head back and really putting ur hands into it)

if you have any tips please let me know because i’ve been trying to do a backtuck since i was 9 and nothing rlly is working

I do trampolining and maybe see if someone could spot u or get someone to tie a rope around you and stand at the side of the trampoline bc the u get the independence. Also think of it like a back walkover , Reach back , look for your toes , rotate , spot the floor and land (and don't hesitate half way thru cuz it hurts 😅) Good luck!

Mental blocks happen everywhere in gymnastics. The back handspring and backtuck are just the first view into this. It’s a gateway. Have you done your conditioning? Are you doing your v-ups and frog jumps at team standards? Can you see your height in the mirrors as to do a straddle jump? The backhand spring does not automatically lead to a tuck- it actually takes more technique. Tramps don’t help either because they give you different, very slow, timing with artificial height. Have you practiced standing tuck jumps with the different arm lifts and felt the moment of rotation? Stand from a fold up mat and tuck jump onto a crash mat. Over and over. Get spots. Your tuck jump should be over your own shoulder height. When you’re ready, you’ll toss them and land on your knees onto that mat, even when you’re jumping from a higher mat. -because nothing prepares you to land it except doing it. Over and over. Face your fears. Build your strength. Make sure you have a spotter. When you can land badly on a crash mat, do as many as you can in one evening until you get to your feet. Then, drop the mat. Work it until you can go from the floor up onto the crash mat. Your base strength conditioning will make it possible. You wanna do it at a party as a trick? It’s different-different environment, different floor, distractions… so even after you can land it consistently on your feet on a crash mat, you have to face more fears by doing it on the floor, off the horse, and in many different places. Then, practice with your shoes on, then jeans. Gymnastics is like the first of the X-games! You must be fueled by the adrenaline, more height, more power. -Because all the drills in the world will not replace the knowledge you gain from giving it your all and deciding consciously to take control of your fate and carry out the move. Commit. Good luck.
