Ok, i am almost sure there is another thread on this but i can't seem to find it so mods, feel free to merge (not that you wouldn't otherwise)

So what's your opinion?

I personally don't see the problem with them when they are used safely however when you mix someone crazy (like my cousin who has two olympic size trampolines at his house and decided to chuck a double back....thank god he is one of the few that has unusual natural ability and good aerial awareness) and a backyard trampoline it can go horribly wrong.

So....what are your thoughts

I agree completely!! backyard trampolines are awesome, fun and a great way to practice especially during holidays :) i think backyard tramps with an enclosure and parent near by are safe!! i personally love my backyard tramp and use it all the time :)

My 3 boys have always had a trampoline. When their first one ran out of spring I decided to buy the biggest one I could get. 16 feet across, round with enclosure.

They have all spent a huge amount of time on the tramp, and so have their friends.

My oldest son even did physical therapy prescribed by the Occupational Therapist on the trampoline. I seem to recall the speech therapist also had some fun activities to help with speech on the trampoline, like sequencing.

I actually just bought my kids a trampoline last summer. We haven't set it up yet because we were moving and didn't want the hassle of taking it back down. This summer it will be set up at the new house but they are only allowed on it when we are right there. It does have an enclosure. Also when we are done playing with it we will roll it behind the garage and put a tarp over it. I don't want neighborhood kids coming over and getting on it. So it will only be out when it is in use.

We have had a trampoline for about 5 years now and I think it is great excercise for the kids! Ours has an enclosure and a double mat so it help minimize the double bouce if 2 kids are jumping at the same time. The enclosure on our tramp has held up nicely and overall it looks brand new still after 5 years in the weather and multiple kids jumping. I do belive it is the safest trampoline out there. Definately worth the money.

We have one and it is a good fit for our situation. It is enclosed for safety and on a flat spot. Bella loves flipping and jumping on it. Her friends enjoy it too. They use the structure for playing games too. Plus, we just like to lie on it and look up at the stars or clouds and talk to one another.

I even use it for exercise sometimes and Bella practices her front and back handsprings on it. Also her back tuck.

My thoughts:

In an ideal world, gymnasts wouldn't practice on back yard trampolines at all.

In the real world, telling them not to is about as effective as telling college students not to drink beer.

What I tell my students (and their parents) is that kids shouldn't be trying anything new on back yard trampolines; they should stick to skills they have already learned and perfected in the gym. In most cases, it is easier for us coaches to teach a skill from scratch than it is to correct the technique on that same skill self-taught on a backyard tramp.

This is why I have not gotten my DD a trampoline even though I know she wants one. That and after spending a fair amount of time on a friend's trampoline, DD came off and her feet hurt so bad she thought she couldn't walk. Now I do think she already had some issues going on with her feet before getting on the tramp, but I just feel like the gym is the place to do gymnastics, under the direction of a qualified coach (IMHO). :)

We got this same trampoline this summer and we love it. I feel very safe with it, and I am glad to hear that it has held up so well after 5 years.

AlexsGymmyMom - do you have the extra power bounce springs? If you do what do you think about them? Thanks.

I was against getting one forever. My hubby wasn't and found one at a yard sale for cheap. My girls love it and they are on it everyday now that the weather is nice. I have strict rules and they have been warned it will disappear onto Craigslist if they break them. And they know I am serious.

Sometimes in summer, on the weekends my kids sleep on the tramp. They think that is pretty cool. Bit like camping.
