I wanted to point out that an animated gif does not use up bandwidth.... actually that file there is tiny - only 63kb (about the same bandwidth that would be required to transfer the text in this thread).

Not trying to start anything - I like the policy because personally I think any animated gif is very annoying - so that should be the reason for the policy. I would take it further and say no graphics at all in your sig - but that is just because I am picky like that.
