My dd was doing a trial the other day at a club. I was a little confused as when I first arrived the coach had asked me what hrs is my dd doing. I told him that she is 15hrs and he said to me that is way too much for a 6 year old and that she should be only doing 2 hrs a week. After he finished with her he told me to forget everything that he had said and that she should be doing 15hrs and perhaps more next term. Now I am confused that he firmly believed that a girl of that age should not be doing that many hrs. So why is he changing his mind like that? I am a little worried that if I am putting all my trust into somebody to coach my dd that it seems like he doesn't really know what he is doing.

Like lhmom, I have more questions about your post then answers.

All I can think is that the coach should have watched your dd a bit before telling you anything.

However, 15 hours for a 6yo is too much (imo).
Little bodies need time to rest and grow, and little minds need time to relax and play.

Probably both his opinions on the right number of training hours was based on what stage/skills girls are up to? I'm guessing he underestimated at first based on what he thought a 6 y/o does, then his later estimate was based on having actually seen what stage she's really at?
I know a mother of a gymnast who said "PD" was quite rude/dismissive to her on the phone last year when she rang to compare what they offered compared to what your DD's gym was offering ... she wasn't sure if he didn't want junior IDPs or just didn't believe the level her DD was actually at over the phone.

Thanks for that. We have thought about it and we are not going to change clubs. They wanted too put her in a levels program that I felt was way to old for her the girls were around 14 years old when she is only 6, skill level she was the same but maturity was to young. DD didn't like it either because she was doing a different program so her skills were a little mixed up some things she was more advanced in and other things she hadn't learnt before. At least where she is there is another little girl who is her age and the older girls are around 9 so a little better.
