I came across this board when I was trying to research kids wearing ankle weights. :o (none of my kids wear them now; but I noticed that some of the older girls had them on and it got me wondering if it could lead to injuries.)

I am mom to 3 kids - 8 year old boy/girl twins and their 6 year old little sister. This is my son's second year competing as level 4 (he didn't start on team until November of last year, just before competitions started; but had IMO a great year and a lot of fun). It is both girls' first year competing - my older DD is AAU 3 and my younger DD is AAU2. All of the kids started doing gymnastics at the rec level years ago - when the twins were 4 and my youngest was 2. We actually started rec at the gym we are now at (through our county rec department; but team is separate from the rec department); but took time off and changed when the twins turned 5 because at first they had been told they would be split up (which I had to really talk up to them); but then the rec department swapped to keeping the classes co-ed until 6, and by then I had convinced them it would be better to be separate. So we took about half a year off, then swapped to another gym because they really wanted to go back. That is where my son started on team; but then at the end of the season they announced that they were doing away with their boys' team. We ended up back at the rec gym; but on team and the kids have really settled in.

Next year the girls' teams are swapping to all USAG, currently they do AAU 2 and 3 then swap to USA. I'm kind of still figuring out the whole thing for girls (and the new scoring for boys!).
