hi im a level 8 gymnast and im a sophomore ive reached a point in my gymnastics career where i no longer feel i can reach college gymnastics based on where im at now with my skills, my age at a gym without a big coach to spot and without a pitt, and the coaching. There is a gym about 30 minutes from where I live with all the thing my current gym doesnt have where i could excell with alot of work. but all their gymnast are really young and I dont think I want to give up my social life and drive over there 5 days a week. So im highly considering quitting. The goal was for me to at least be a very good level 9 by the time my senior year rolls around so i might have a slim chance at being a walk on at a small d1 school. I no longer see that happening considering my situation.

So my point is, Ive been state bar champion 3 years in a row 2 years level 7 and one year of level 8. If I could just persue bars I could focus enough on it to make it to level 10 by my senior year and score really high on it. My thinking is, a lot of gymnast in college may only compete one or two events any way, if i was just competing bars I could possibly go to this gym thats 30 minutes away because I wouldnt have to drive down their as much considering im only practiceing one event. I wouldnt be able to qualify for state, regionals, or national considering i wouldnt have an all around score but I could find some big meets to compete at score really high scores that would empress colleges send in some videos and possibly be on a college team
I dont know of any gymnast who have this.
Am i being realistic?

Ok, first et me say that while i was reading this i started to freak out a little bit, this story is only identical to mine only im injured but i would have been a level 8 my sophmore year and besides doing 2 years of level 7...nevermind its just really freaky with the gym 30 min away training more hours with kids half your age, yea thats my other option to haha. But ive actually talked to my coach about doing two events maybe three so that i would have some kind of option and she said that it was possible that once you reach a college team not many ymnasts compete allaround. she also told me that shed perfer me to compete all around but now that im terrified of vaulting im not sure ill make it beyond level 7 with vault. I have the same problem, so pitt, no bigcoach (Actually my coach's are all shorter then me :/) so i know where yourcoming from. But according to my coach it is possible, i would say talk to your coach :)
`Hope this helps!

It would depend on what kind of school you were looking at. Do you want to do one event at a D1 school? Watch some routines of the college girls. I would think that bars would be the hardest to get from where you are to where they would want you. I have been told that bars and vault are the hardest to recruit for. They want 10.0 start values on each and a major release on bars with a d dismount or a connected C.

no..........................

What is your reasoning for such a blunt answer dunno? Ive heard of gymnasts becoming specialist and competing at high levels doing one or two events, i am unsure of whether a college would recruit from a specialist but anything is possible.

Gymnasts that do only 1 event even at the Olympic level are rare. Alicia S. was competing only vault and floor, but then added beam to make herself more valued as a team member. In talking with a few college coaches(D1 and D3) they all said they do not look at event specialists first---not to mean a girl competing 3 events at L10 wouldn't have a chance of getting on a college team, but they try to fill their spots with AAs and then decide what events those girls will compete.
It just like anything else---the more you can bring to the plate, the more interested coaches will be. They need the flexibility of knowing they have some girls that can step up and fill in on all the events.

thanks for the reply my coaches are all shorter than me too hahaha

my reasoning is within the body of her post.

I don't know if it is realistic or not, but this sounds like a kind of half-pie solution. If your goal is to be a good level 9 why not drive the 30 minutes to the other gym? If it is because you don't want to give up your social life, you may need to re-evaluate your goals and priorities, i.e. which is more important to you. There is no right answer, except what feels right for you.
