Parents Knee Injury with no answers :-(

DD8 has had knee pain for a while. It finally got bad enough to go see a doctor. After XRAYS and an MRI, all they determined was discoid meniscus, which shouldn't cause any pain on it's own. They found no tears or inflammation... nothing. She's been on rest since March. Has anyone ever had this issue? Pain, with no diagnosis? She's feeling better (after almost 3 months no gymnastics)... but it still hurts her some and without knowing why it's hurting her, the thought of going back is giving me some anxiety. We all love gymnastics... but it's not worth her knee... but I don't want her to quit if it's not anything serious. I just wish this wasn't happening.

Knees are scary for sure, what level of expertise is the doctor that you saw, is it your general, a sports injury specialist, a knee specialist? Doesn't seem like you would be out of line to try and get a referral to someone else who might have an answer.

Don't mean to be an alarmist but knees are tricky. As a mom of an 18 year old who's been dealing with knee pain for the last 8 years and which forced her out of the sport, I can totally sympathize. We're dealt with several very good orthopedic sports medicine doctors over the time period and I sometimes feel like the crazy mom. Pain occurs for a reason, so have them keep digging until they figure it out. A discoid meniscus can cause pain but correcting it can lead to more problems. (My DD had one too, they fixed it but from what I've read, she may now face a heightened chance of tearing the meniscus.) See if they can check her movements, MRIs and x-rays are static. They discovered that my DD's kneecaps were out of place and had to be surgically moved after a couple of years of complaining. They only saw that when she was moving. Good luck!
