Can you compete Level 7 without giants? My gymnast had all 7 skills except giant and was told had to go platinum because she could not do giant (severe mental block). Now has then with a spot on pit bar. College aspirations and will be 16. Has Level 7, 8, and 9 skills on other areas. Level 6 State champion last year went to regionals. Feel like being held back.

You can, but many gyms won’t let you. A giant is a basic bar skill for upper level/college gymnastics if that’s her goal. Does she have a strong toe-hand or clearhip handstand she could do instead? My daughter competed level 9 without giants, not because she can’t do them but because a toe-hand is worth more.

She has both. However she is stuck at platinum due to gym rule.

Gym rules like this drive me crazy ... especially when a giant is not USAG a requirement at any level.
And if she has the toe-hand and clearhip handstand, then she should be doing Diamond if they are pushing her to Xcel ... like L7, Diamond requires 5 A and 2 B skills on each event, but they can do ANY C skills and up to 1 D skill per event.

I agree 100% and am learning a lot. Poor daughter just wants to try to get to a level where she will be looked at and feel like her gym has just wasted her time as they don't do anything for kids who want to go to college. Jus found this out recently. Not inspiring at all.

If they want giants or Xcel, see if she could do Diamond. I edited my previous post with this:

She could work more difficult skills while competing for this gym this season and MOVE after the season is over!

It would make the transition to L8 easier too.

Thank you for this and already asked about this and we were told because she does not have the giant, we cannot move her to 7 or diamond.

We are beginning to look for other gyms, but question is moving in middle of season or after. One gym will move her to 7. So torn.

Beyond the current situation on gym rules and giants, a 16 year old level 7 is not going to be seen by colleges. They are looking primarily at level 10s and elites. She should probably be looking at schools with club teams if she wants to continue with gymnastics after high school.
