So DS has had 4 crappy months with his bad wrist. Finally after casting, resting etc....went back for final MRI to put an end to this injury and now they say it was a misdiagnosed fracture of the styloid in the ulna....tiny but super painful!!!

He is clear to go, but the injury healed badly and may hurt for several months. Doctor prescribed a 'bone stimulator' to speed up the process of this fracture that is half healed....he said there is nothing more to do and that in a NON-Gymnast it would not be an issue.

He suggested to stay away from circles and undergrip HB for a bit longer...

I pray this magical machine will help!!

Go to an orthopedic physician who specializes in hands....ask around, get referrals....I'm a therapist and if the doctor made comments like that (especially about a child: regardless if they are a gymnast or not), then that's a red flag that you need to find someone who understands the importance of your wrist and hand in active LIFE!

Like you said, you've already had a rough months with this injury...don't mess around with a doctor who isn't getting it healed. Pain is not ok for any child. Again, take out the gymnastics aspect-this child will need his hand to function in a job, as a parent and to live life to his fullest....I just wouldn't mess around anymore. You pay the physician to do a job...after four months and only partially healed (and not in the right position at that)...is not acceptable. And then to say it would be ok if your child was not a gymnast....um, NO!

Sorry to be so bold....but I hate seeing kids suffer because it can be "good enough". I saw it a lot when kids had injuries with hands and fingers...if they heal incorrectly, it affects aspects of their life for years....

my only comment is that someone said it was "misdiagnosed". who said that? the Doc that diagnosed it in the first place?? if so, run, don't walk, to the next Doc asap. :)

He saw Hand specialist, cheif surgical fellow at a major hospital.....He said these things are very hard to see on xray. First Pediatric sports ortho missed it and Hand guy treated it as a ligament injury....treatment was the same at the end of the day....
MRI finally showed the scar tissue on bone and that is when they saw it. DS will have to deal with this 'slower' healing process. Or just wait...something I think most gymnasts dont want to do. he has been off of it already for 2 months. He wants to get back in. We will see......we must reamin at a low pain threshold.
I wish it was something more siomple but it isnt....I cant magically fix it.
