I recently joined an Xcel Silver Team, and I'm curious about what ny gym would look for to move me up or not. Our first meet is in December, and we have 6 meets with our last one in March. I believe you need a 30 AA score to move up, which would mean a 7.5 or higher on each event.

My biggest questions: Are move ups immediate, are you just moved to train but not competing the next level, or are you forced to wait until the end of the competition season to move up?

I know this likely depends on the gym and the gymnasts capabilities, but I'm interested in what the general opinion is.

Hii! So I’m now AAU gold, and former level five. So, if I’m understanding correctly, you’ll move up at the end of meet season and put into excel gold or if you’re not ready yet, you can do another year of silver. (If you have any questions please ask and I hope this helps)

At both gyms that my dd went to, they competed Nov/Dec to March/April. They did a little bit of uptraining for the next level during the current competition season. After the state meet, it was all prep for the next level for everyone. In mid August, they told everyone the level they would be competing the next season based on the skills they had achieved for the new level. They would all still be considered during spring/summer training the level they had just finished. When the new school year schedule came out, then they would be considered the level that they are competing that season and would be registered with usag with that level.

I wouldn't focus on that score. I know our gym would never move up someone getting a 30 in silver. Honestly they wouldn't have even been on team if they weren't going to be able to average close to a 9 in silver.

Generally, you compete while uptraining where possible. At the end of the season, coaches make decisions for summer training groups and levels are typically finalized at the end of the summer or beginning of fall. Ideally, the decision doesn't catch anyone off guard because the criteria should be relatively clear, preferably based on skills.

Generally, move-ups don't happen mid-season. And this makes sense: you learn a routine, then you spend a season perfecting it; you wouldn't want to learn a new routine in the couple weeks between one meet and the next. It also makes sense from a scheduling and coaching standpoint; coaches and administrators don't want their groupings to dramatically change mid-season, they want to have a group that shows up at the same times and has the same number of gymnasts so they can make a training plan for the season and stick to it.

That said, most coaches will do some uptraining where you're ready for it.

Most of the time, move ups aren't really decided by scores, but by skills.
