My son started cheerleading this year. He's very excited and shows a talent. We just got him in a class at a local gymnastics studio and the teacher was very impressed with him.
We live in a small town and are fighting against the idea of this being a girl dominated sport. The coaches, if you can call them that, were excited about him but he keeps getting left out. Nobody has adjusted pronouns so all the correspondence is always been "the girls" and pom poms and mid-drift and things that have nothing to pertain to my son. They have their initials on their jackets but not my son since his is different anyway. I know it's a little thing but children notice these things and he notice he gets treated different.
Well we now got him with a studio and the owner is a male cheerleader who had to grow up with all of this so I'm excited. My son will have a great role model. And in just one class he has showed a lot of talent and hoping this is just a starting point for him.
I know this is a lot to take for me to get to this and I apologize. I need to ask other parents what should I do from here to help him. We are new to this and there is hardly any information on what to do with males in this sport. We will probably focus on cheerleading but gymnastics is the base of that. He asked me to get a tumbling mat for him for the backyard and I do not know what I should be looking for or if there's anything that he may not know that he needs. Ideas and support would be greatly appreciated.
thank you!
