So hoping that all of this is just the result of puberty/growing? (not that he has ever really grown fast, but maybe...)

For the past 2 weeks, his foot hurts. He didnt hurt it in any way, didn't land funny or twist that he can remember, nothing. BUt randomly, it hurts. He claims all across the bottom, but of course, when I ask, it is one of the times it is not hurting.

Tonight he couldn't tumble or vault. of course, those are 2 things he really needs to work on. ALl of this seems to be coming on the heels of some apathy (man...this pre-teen stuff stinks). He is just kind of cruising along without a real goal right now (kind of like this post)

Guess I am just venting! Not really sure what to do other than ride it out. He needs a swift kick in the pants, but I know that won't help at all! So, I vent!

Possibly...or sever's :( Trying to figure it out, but I think we might have to go in :(

Uggh. I feel for you, as DD just yesterday finally put in her first full practice in four weeks after a layoff due to foot soreness that was not a stress fracture but was never really diagnosed as anything. I hope it's Sever's -- at least with that he can lay off a little while, and then get a heel cup and be fine, with any luck. Poor guy!

His coach also mentioned that it could just be a bruised heel. From what I have read, I am leaning towards the early stages of Severs (hurts in the morning, when tumbling, but not all the time). Going to see how the next couple of days go with ice, stretching and ibuprofen and go from there. Maybe he will get really really good at high bar!

I had a terrible case of plantar fasciitis from running. It felt like a very badly bruised heel. It always hurt in the morning because the tendon tightens up so much during sleep. Just throwing that out there. I know nothing about Severs though.

Talked to coach tonight and he thinks that there could be an issue with him being a little duck footed. Maybe that causes him to tumble on his heels and causes his sway back posture. So now we are going to try heel cups in his shoes and try to find some exercises to work on that. Any ideas or resources?

Do you think it would be at all useful to see a podiatrist??

right now we are doing stretching, ice and ibuprofen. Might try the ortho if things get worse. I am still hoping that it passes....wishful thinking I am sure!

Fingers crossed that it feels 100% better with some rest and ice!

So, a PT friend of mine whose son is also on D's team did me a huge favor today and did a consultation on D. She looked at his feet, his hips, his back, his legs, etc. turns out that the coach was headed in the right direction, but not quite the right road.

APparently, D has weak ankle tendons that is causing him to pronate his feet a bit. More so on the left (which is the one that hurts.) So, he has "floppy feet" She saw him tumble tonight and said that because his ankle tendons are weak, he has to land on his heels rather than his toes because his ankles can't support the weight.

There is also something with something in his butt (LOL gluteus medius?) It controls the hip flexors? So his hip flexors are tight because that muscle is weak.

The good news is, it isn't serious. The bad news is, he is goign to have to work extra hard in order to fix this issue, in addition to fixing his bad habits that have developed. But if he can do it, then it should heal. hopefully!

That is good news! Hopefully once the coach knows, he can work out some plan to start strengthening those tendons!
