I’m a freshman who tried out for varsity gymnastics this past week, but I didn’t make the team. I’m a XP training XD right now. I saw the barstool account for my HS’s gymnastics team and it seems like there are kids on the team who have never touched a vault or bars. This is my first time trying out for a team, so I don’t really know what coaches look for when selecting athletes. What are the additional factors and traits look for in athletes? Any tips or advice is appreciated!

Were the girls who have never done gymnastics also freshman? or were they upperclassmen? Do they do other sports like cheerleading or acro? In high school, you don't need to compete all 4 events, you can contribute to only a few, or only one. So, it would make sense if they do cheer or acro, and have some tumbling experience to make a team, and only contribute to an event like floor.

I used to live in a state with HS gymnastics, and I can think of a few reasons that this happened (even if I don’t agree with it- I’m sorry it didn’t work out this year):

-some HS teams don’t take girls who are currently training with a club
-some HS teams have “optional” pre-season clinics and practices that are actually mandatory and used to gauge interest
-the girls who don’t have much experience may be upperclassman returning to the team and the standard for new freshman may be quite high
-the HS Coach knows your club coach and something happened because of that (could be anything from bad blood between them, bad behavior of girls from your club in the past, etc)
-the HS Coach has the impression that you think you are above HS gymnastics or won’t prioritize it
-a problem with grades or eligibility that you’re not aware of

I would honestly recommend going to the coach and asking for feedback! In our area, gymnastics is pretty much no cut in that anyone can join but not everyone will make lineups.

I think all of the girls chosen were from the varsity cheer team, so I won’t deny that they have exceptional floor skills. Majority were freshman and two sophomores who weren’t on the team previously. I think everyone else was on the team last year.

I appreciate all the pointers! Would shying away from the group or not talking to them as much be a contribution factor?

Thank you, I really appreciate the advice!
