Hello! We’re located in Brooklyn and my daughter has recently become very serious about wanting to join a competitive team. She is relatively new to the sport but her rec coach says she has a lot of talent and could pursue any of the available tracks. I kind of understand what being on DP team entails, so am curious to learn more about the USAIGC vs Xcel programs. Not sure why one would one over the other and curious about people’s experiences in general, and particularly in NYC. Thank you all!

Pick a gym and program that is convenient for your family and has friendly and fun coaches, any of the programs are fine to start with, after a season of competing you will know a lot more on what track to pursue. The main thing is that she loves the sport and the people she's working with, don't stress about being at the perfect gym, if she doesn't like the sport than it doesn't matter anyways.

My daughter has always been on the DP track but I know there are gyms in the city that offer Xcel (92y, Chelsea Piers) and others than offer USAIGC (Gotham, NYC Elite). My daughter has friends in both Xcel and USAIGC at those gyms. Xcel and USAIGC seem to be very similar programs from what I’ve observed, and out of curiosity (because I’ve had this exact same question after seeing our first gym offer one and our second gym offer the other), I’ve also spent time asking Google what the differences are and other than the “technical” answer (one is USAG and one is independent), I still couldn’t REALLY say why you’d choose one versus the other. I would recommend picking the gym that is most convenient and feels the most like home rather than choosing Xcel over USAIGC or vice versa. There are others on here who I am sure know more about the programs, but I wanted to share my view as someone whose daughter has always been at NYC gyms.
