But we had a scare at the gym yesterday and that's kinda pushed me to get posting here. I pulled in to drop the girls off and there were two ambulances, a paramedic and a cruiser. We go in and they were all on the floor. A girl was doing a double back and landed on her head. At that point she had been knocked unconscious and was unable to move her arms or legs but did have feeling in her fingers and toes. They took her to the hospital with one of the coaches, they had a hard time tracking down her parents from what I heard. As far as I know she is okay, her neck was sprained and she suffered a concussion but no breaks. She is a lucky girl.

Getting a phone call from the gym is bad enough but that phone call, I just felt for her parents. I know it's a dangerous sport and for a fleeting second I wanted to pull both girls but reality came back to me and I couldn't take their passion away for my fear. :)

I just needed to get that out.

It is very hard to see that. I arrived at my daughters meet to find the same scene, I felt like turning around and going home. Never easy to dal with, but kids can get hurt anywhere and in my experience my kids have been hurt more at school than at gym!!

I pray for her, and while I've never been in that situation personally, I know plenty of teammates who recovered just fine and returned to gymnastics after emergency scares like that. I'm happy to say I haven't had anything more than a broken arm under my watch as a coach, and that was a rec kid who didn't listen that standing on the barrel wasn't a good choice. I have been at summer camps, gymnastics meets, etc where emergency response was called and all came through with flying colors. Most were neck scares where coaches erred on the side of caution rather than treating the injury themselves.

This is a dangerous sport and sometimes a dose of reality is healthy, just wish it wasn't so scarey. I'm glad you kept a cool head and didn't just knee jerk.

Again, I pray for a speedy recovery for the young gymmie.

Thank you for the reminder! Another issue your post brought up that I'd like to highlight is being accessible to the gym at all times. This day & age with cell phones it's much easier but like this instance shows, even today there are circumstances that leave us out of touch.

I live with that fear myself. When older DD was in gym, we saw her teammate nearly crash to the ground with the beam! She was going for her rbt dismount when the end of the beam slowly started to go down. If the coach hadn't caught her, she would have seriously hurt herself. This is def. a dangerous sport and I hope DD has as diligent a coach that will intervene to stop a similar serious injury. I hope really angels surround my child-every child every day!

I worry about this at times, too. Fear of injuries is the main reason we won't sign DS up for football. Many of these sports have a risk of injury, but I try to remember that kids can hurt anywhere. And, the risk of injury is why we must make sure kids are being coached in a safe environment by competent coaches and our kids are not trying to do things they are not ready to do.

I hope that gymmie recovers quickly!

I hope this girl recovers quickly. I live in fear everytime the phone rings while my DD at at practice.

I saw an ambulance yesterday coming from the direction of the gym as I was driving to pick up my daughter from practice. It was the first time I thought to myself - what if that was my daughter in there and she was injured and I wasn't at the gym? It is tough getting over that fear to constantly protect especially when you know your child loves a sport where injuries are a given (hopefully minor) if they stay in it long enough.
