Proud Parent
Has anyone had their gymmie retire from gym, go on to another sport and the training/competition just not be enough for them?

My dd retired in spring, not by choice, and has chosen soccer as her sport. She played in spring, loved it, couldn't get enough of it. She is trying out for her high school team, she will make it, they don't cut any freshman o sophomore. She also wants to play in the city's rec league with the coach she played for in the spring. She should be okay doing this, I already spoke with the coach and he is the one who suggested it in the first place. I just don't know how I will pull it off having 3 in soccer, one playing 2 different leagues.

One of the few cases where I miss being married to their dad, at least if then he could help play taxi service.

It is good for kids to understand that they cannot do everything. Along the way I had to tell my kids that things just wouldn't work out for them. Either financially, driving distance was too far and more recently that they could no longer do a sport due to health reasons. Life is not fair and sometime we have to make choices. I know it is very difficult to say no, but what else can you do when there is no way to make things happen.

Mine quit gymnastics for travel soccer and it was a great fit for her. In addition to travel soccer, she plays 3 school sports a year, XC, basketball and soccer. Some days it is a little tough, but overall it works out well for her. In the summers, she trains XC, by running everyday, plus she does about 6 hours of speed school a week, where she is training with a sprint specialist on acceleration, agility and vertical jump. She is currently having 2 soccer practices a week. I also enter her in various 5 K during the summer months to help with motivation. She is happier now, then she ever was in the gymnastics gym.

Mine's just quit gymnastics. Not entirely through choice- she was offered an opportunity to train elite in another sport, and there just aren't enough days in the week, as much as she would have tried.

It's only been a few weeks so not sure how it will end up yet. I worry that the other sport won't be "enough"- I was a gymnast and I can't quite understand how you can be as good as DD was (talented, but highly unlikely to reach elite for many reasons) and give up that feeling that gymnastics gives you. Dh thinks she'll be fine as her goals are far higher than gymnastics could ever take her, that's why she chose the other sport.

This is one of the reasons my DD can't get into dance (the main one though is so she can drive me crazy). The first time I enrolled her into a ballet class after she got used to gym hours, she came out after 50 minutes and said, "We're on break already?"

She couldn't believe that class was over. Just snorted and said something not very nice.

I don't mind her playing for two teams, sure it will be a bit more stressful on my but so be it. She loves the sport and is good at it.

I am glad she isn't the only one who other sports 'normal' is just not enough. I guess I should look on the bright side. When she was in gym she was too busy between work and school to get into anything she shouldn't be doing. Now between two soccer teams she will be in the same situation.

My DD had an experience like this but she is still in gymnastics. She wanted to try out our local running club that went for 6 weeks last year. It was only an hour and a half but I kept thinking, first I send her off for 4 hours of practice and then another 1 1/2 of running! I think this might be too much. But she wanted to try it so I said lets try and if it is too much then we scale back. We went to the first practice and their warm up was 1 lap. The rest was drill for speed and relay hardly any running. She was so surprised at how little they actually did! She had a blast with it. Unfortunately it didn't happen this year. Coaches moved.
