At a meet a few weeks ago a level 4 girl did a great vault. She received a perfect 10, which I have never seen before. Even our gym has not seen one in like 10 years. Just wondering thoughts about giving a perfect 10 at level 4? Seems so early for such an achievement and it is unlikely to happen again as it was a great vault, but perfect, no.

Just wondering thought on this topic. Thanks;)

Yep I have seen a few 10s at level 4 vault. I have also seen a 10 on level 5 floor. Depends on the judges, some are tougher than others.

It seems like if you are going to see 10s it would be earlier when the skills and routines are more simple. My ds went to an away meet a couple years ago and there was a 10 given at level 4-- for pommel horse no less. When my dd did level 6 state, there was a beam routine that received a 9.975. Three of the judges gave her a 10. I wish I had seen the routine, but our team was on floor at the time. It must have been great. I know one of the judges who have her a 10 and she is not an easy judge by any stretch of the imagination.

I would think that in this Level 4 vault the judges just didn't see anything that they could deduct for, which in the scoring world means a 10.0 or "perfect". Did you see anything that could have been a deduction? Also, there really isn't a "video" of what a perfect 10.0 vault looks like so how can we and the judges really know what a perfect vault looks like for each individual girl.

This reminds me of some Level 4 video that I saw a while back on youtube of this little girl that got crazy high scores. While I was watching I was saying to myself "Oh, THIS is what the routine is supposed to look like!!"

At a meet in October, a level 4 in my area was given a perfect 10 on beam! She went right before a girl from my team, and everyone was cheering during her routine and messed her up :b

Just a thought...

Wow, a perfect 10 on a level 4 vault! A girl who goes to a gym nearby got a perfect 10 on beam but I remember my coach telling me about it and saying how he wouldn't have given her that. There is always room for improvement and if you recieve a 10 you just assume nothing needs to be worked on and you might not try as hard on that event anymore. Its just an opinion and a thought but it kind of does make sense. All judges are different and what might be a perfect 10 to one judge could simply just be a 9.5 for another.

The most likely reason I can think of is that the judges gave out high scores before this vault, and felt they had to honour the difference by giving out a score which reflected the gap of the better performance - perfect or not.
I personally tend to disregard the actual scores and just look at the gaps between the placings.

"Perfect 10s" on L4 vault is not all that rare in the last 2-3 years (at least as seen in this area). Last year at states that my younger kid attended, we had 7 10s. The girl at our gym who scored 10s multiple times throughout the regular seasons received a 9.9 and she placed 19th on vault.

It just seems that USAG levels at the lower end is often about feeling good anymore.

A 9.9 was 19th place!!?? That tells me that maybe those kids should move up. Are these gyms striving for perfection? I have seen several L4 vault 10's and a beam I think, maybe even a L5 floor. The trouble is when the girls move to higher levels the scoring is not so high, maybe a let down. Then again I guess if their form starts out that great it carries through to higher levels.
I guess it is one of those things we will never understand.

Yup, I double-checked the result sheet before I posted. All numbers were stated just like it happened.

Like I said, it had a lot to do with gratification; maybe a way to retain the gymnasts at least temporarily. While I agree that success is important to kids who are starting out but I don't think that approach is good for the sports and the gymnasts in a long run.

With regards to advancement, these scores are solely indicators of how they did at that level. The said nothing about being ready to move up. It would be even a bigger mistake to move these girls up based on scores alone.

As far as I know, there have been no 10s in L4 vault in my state. I can in recentish memory think of a 9.95 or something on L7 bars. After that year it seemed like the scoring of that event tightened up a little. Scoring is kind of progressive though. The problem with scoring "on the high end" is that you kind of "run out". If you've ever watched an NCAA meet, you've observed this phenomenon (this is to the benefit of this level of gymnastics, spectator driven). You might see routines get a 10 that might have a noticeable execution error - for example an extra step - but the judges have already awarded a 9.975 and this routine was "better." It seems like L4 vault scores awfully high in some places from what I've seen. My guess is eventually the judges are just going higher based on comparison and end up at 10s.

USAG has made some changes to bring down the level of difficulty at the lower levels to keep more kids in the sport. Removing the kip from L4 is an example of one of these changes. But whether compulsories is "feel good" probably depends on the regional treatment of it. In my state we see plenty of kids who struggle to qualify for sectionals or states, level 4 and up.
