I will echo this 1000 times ...if you are squeamish about the cost in pre team , it doesn't get any better. The cost per hour will be lower as she goes up in level but instead of 22 bucks an hour per week ($22/wk) for 1 rec class , you'll pay 7 bucks a hour for 20 hours a week ($140/wk) at least when she hits team levels.
I've said it multiple times, no family should go into financial hock or ruin for a kid's leisure sport... sure some kids get scholarships but it's not enough of an upswing risk to gamble family finances on. There are plenty of activities kids can learn to love that are cheaper
exactly! When my dd started team it was very reasonable! And I looked at the cost/hour ratio and thought it was a steal. The gym didn't have a lot of hidden costs and meets were all local so not a ton on travel. Sounded great!
Then, your kid keeps advancing, and she outgrows the gym you had chosen so carefully and that gym isn't the right fit anymore. Either coaching isn't able to handle the higher levels or the gym itself isn't meant for higher levels...or sometimes gyms close. Then you find yourself traveling further just to take her to practices (more time, more money for gas, more time away from other family commitments and the siblings sports and hobbies), and possibly paying higher tuition fees and meet fees. And of course the higher the level the further you travel for meets. But these things all happen slowly. Just one more thing....you can swing just a little more right. Then a little more right?
Don't want to sound pessimistic, because this is an awesome sport and it teaches the kids so much!!....but.....I think everyone should go in with eyes wide open.
the cost only goes up as your dd gains in skill and levels. By the time they are level 10, It's not just the monthly tuition--- it's the added mandatory (at some gyms) week long camps (figure at least $500 + hotel and travel) and the Regional camps (cheaper, maybe $150 + travel and hotel if needed). Some do one camp a year , some require multiple camps that involve travel and paying your coaches to go along (paying their costs for travel and hotels and food). Things are changing recruiting wise and now you really need to try and attend as many college camps (to the colleges you're interested and have a realistic shot at). So figure $350-400 for each camp and then travel and hotel costs on top of each camp. There's also the cost of traveling to meets across the country (sometimes multiple a year...and yes, again mandatory for some gyms). It's the $500 leo/warm up/warm up leos, the matching "team travel gear", the $2000-$3000 in meet fees and coaches fees. It can break the bank!
When the cost got to be at a breaking point for us (when I had to look at just how long this kind of spending could be sustained), my dd only had 2 yrs left and had a D1 spot on the line. What parent is going to slam the door in your kids face at that stage if they can in any way pull it off? I was honest with my kid, I told her that she was lucky she didn't have 5 yrs left to graduate....that there is no way we could stay at her gym for longer than what we needed to. That if she had more years left before graduating that a serious discussion of the future would be in order.
I am extremely grateful to this sport and what it has done for my dd. Please don't take my comments as a rip on the sport. I just want to be real in associating costs to that.
