I also am really bothered by the thick layered look.
A coach once told my son's group that it looks like they're wearing diapers when the shorts are under the pommel pants. So it was a no-go with that coach. My kiddo would prefer the ease of not removing clothing, but I often remind him of the "diaper look" and he stops complaining.

Ugh my son layers everything. He doesn't like to strip down to singlet between events. Hoping he gets more comfortable with that.

My Ds' coach won't allow that, he makes them change shorts or pants.

Yeah apparently one of my son's former coaches called the layered look "diaper butt" so none of the kids will be caught dead doing that now.
Another vote for boxer briefs, my sons so far prefer cotton. One son wears regular briefs to compete.

This might be a little tmi and my son would be mad if he knew I was asking but it's driving me crazy....

What kind of underwear is best? It seems like my son is always messing with his while in the gym. We don't see it at home so I know it's not a wrong size issue.
