I noticed a thread in the parent forum that was about staying on top of school work as hours increase and i thought it might be a good idea to have a thread where everyone can participate.

So how do you/your dd stay organised?
or how would you suggest to stay organised as hours and school work increase?

Oh my goodness. I don't even know anymore. I'm a level 7, working out about 17 hrs/week, and I've got a full courseload including 2 AP and 3 "Honors" classes...school starts at 7:10 (for me, I need to take P.E. early in the morning because my schedule is full...and of course they don't let athletes opt out unless you're on a school team...) and ends at 3:15. Then it's off to practice until 8 or 9 at night. Get home, eat dinner, do homework. If I'm lucky I'm in bed by 10:30. Doesn't leave a lot of time for...well...anything.

Well it starts when they are at L4. OUr rule is School always comes first so she has missed practices due to homework. But in general she saw her big brother doing team and school first and knew that if she really wanted to do this that the she would have to find the time for homework. She does some on the bus ride home, she bring homework with her at lunch time/recess time and works on it. In the classroom usually the last 10 min of each class is give to start the homework so if anyone has issues with it the teacher can see who is struggling.

My DD hardly ever has leftover homework for home. She gets 99% of it done at school or on the bus. I almost never see her do any studying but she does somehow. And she is a straight A student. If she just has a little homework she may bring it to gym to do at break time (usually 15 min during the practice time) or in the car on the drive over and back.

She has become very good at time management.

hehe lucky for me i have no homework :-) i go to school from 8:52-3:30 and thats all my work i may have an assigment or two but barely ever. the rule of my school is if you don't finish it in class you have to finish it at home, im a very fast worker so i complete all mine easily even if it is 2 chapters aka 10 pages of math haha. most people finish it :) . that's one thing i like about my school haha :)

You are sooooo lucky!! I swear our teachers go out of there way to give hw.

Cher, Unfortunately we don't get the luxury of 10mins of class for hw, and i am going into year 11 (junior year i think) and well, that means about 3hrs of hw/revision and i just realised that training starts earlier.

Mack i think i am going to be similar to you next year :P

We have been lucky so far as school/homework. DD gets 12 pgs of math on Monday to turn in on Fri. She does it all on Tues (no practice) she does a book report every 2 weeks that I try to have her complete over the weekends. Their school day is very long 8:45 to 4, so teachers try to have written work done during the day. Our gym ride is about 40 min and I encourage girls to work on things during the ride. A great example is set by older gymnasts who are often studying when not working out. Our gym also requires report cards to make sure the girls are able to juggle sport and school. Bad report cards means restricted gym time. I expect big changes by middle school but hopefully, the shorter school day will allow for a few hours of study time before practice. Our gym has open hours starting for optionals, 2 - 7:30. This means you can get your 3 or 4 hours in based on school work load. We have 1 girl who is elite and she is homeschooled but the rest of the 9/10's manage to get it all done, even reading while running on treadmill or eliptical.

I think that is a great idea with the gym checking report cards, That is a gym with the right priorities and it clearly works if they have elite and high level gymnasts. I think it would be great if it was based on maintaining/improving current grades and not expecting a student who no matter how hard they work to get an A because like some people will never be able to cartwheel an A is unrealistic for some.
