This is a step in the right direction. I hope that whoever replaces him is more focused on keeping our athletes safe from harm. Of course, we want them to be successful, but that cannot be the driving force behind decisions.

Let's hope whoever replaces him has some experiemce in abuse prevention.

They need someone like Kelly Hill or Mary Lee Tracy. Someone who will make to organization much more healthy athlete first.

When the actions, words, and leadership of USAG clearly and consistently demonstrate that ensuring the safety of gymnasts is their number one focus (acknowledging the issues, learning from them, and effectively implementing broad-based changes, while maintaining clear two-way communication), only then will USAG have a strategy in place for its own long-term viability.

Athlete care and safety must be the cornerstone on which the organization is based.

Anything less is unacceptable.

Yes – agreed.

USAG’s odyssey to regain the trust of parents can start here, but it needs to include meaningful, lasting culture change, and re-prioritization over the long term. Switching leaders must be followed by extensive changes, otherwise it equates to simply a superficial solution.

A paradigm shift within USAG is needed. They have a perception problem and a trust problem with parents right now, and a significant safety and wellness problem with athletes.

It is a small step on what needs to be a long journey.

It was about time that the top of USAG admitted that their handling of abuse complaints was not fit for purpose and Penny was too involved in this mishandling - a fresh start was needed for everyone.

In related news - more details have emerged of the sacking of the MSU coach - and the emotional blackmail she subjected the team to regarding Nassar - particularly disgusting was that last September, after Nassar had been fired amid the abuse allegations, she coerced the team into signing a condolence card expressing sympathy for his situation and blamed victims for trying to set him up (apparently the victims somehow downloaded pornography onto his computer).

Not celebrating but see it a a sign that the organization is taking change seriously.
At the risk of de-certification, did USAG have a choice? Ask yourself, does Penny's removal change the culture at USAG that put them in this position?

No, not for me. Not yet anyway. What they do next will be telling, so I hope they step up to the plate.
