That's pretty common for the Northeast, the partial week, then a full. From a teacher's point of view, it works out well. The first few days of school are always going to be getting books, filling out paperwork, explaining the class routines, etc. Get that done that short week, and begin the first full week ready to go with academics. Although that first day for you--the 26th--seems a little strange. Just one random day? Why?

Gr 1 & 2 go on monday and any first year students from any other grade other than Kindergarten, Gr 3 & 4 go on Tues Gr 5 & 6 go on wed Gr 7 & 8 go on Thurs and the Kindergarten on Friday. The go for about 3 hours And that is it.

Such a waste of time since 99% of the paperwork we already have and just have to return actually this week before they start. Other than the Kindergarten kids and the first year students everyone knows what to expect and class routines. It's a small private catholic school and not alot changes from year to year.

Wow, now that's just nonsense. I teach in a public school, so its very different. I imagine they end up with attendence problems in the higher grades for the first few days...
