Hi all! My question is about team sizes.
  • How many athletes are on your child's team (per level)?
    • JO or Xcel.
  • Does your gym have a cap/max amount of athletes per team?
    • Is the cap strict? How do they handle situations where a gymnast is ready to move up but there is no 'room' on the next level.
Trying to get a grasp for what the norm is for the sport/most gyms.

We are a bigger gym. We have 1 (preteam), 2 (split comp and preteam), 3-4, 6-10, xcel silver (preteam), gold, platinum, and diamond, + boys team. Here is a rough estimate of how many of each level we have

1 - only 1 girl
2 - 17 on team, + 20ish? girls preteam level 2
3 - 10
4 - 11
6 - 10
7 - 6
8 - 9
9 - 2
10 - 1
XS - 13?
XG - 8
XP - 10
XD - 4
Boys - 7? (1 level 6, the rest are level 4)

We don't have a max cap of athletes per team

I have a boy and our gym has 4 multilevel training groups, which are currently divided up as follows: level 3, bronze, & silver; level 3, 4 & gold; level 4 & 5; levels 5-10. The goal is to keep the coach to athlete ratio around 1:12 with the younger boys having slightly smaller groups and the older boys having slightly larger groups. The boys who train with the next level up are usually older, more advanced, or trying to match an older sibling’s training schedule. No one is ever held back just because of a lack of room in the next training group. Kids compete whatever level is appropriate and the gym shuffles around the training groups to accommodate everyone as well as they can. The gym serves the needs of the kids not the other way around! It’s really not that hard for an organized coach to accommodate multiple levels in a single group. My son’s current group has 15 kids in 5 different levels and it’s no problem.

We are a smaller gym. They don't cap and they rearrange coaches to have enough if the level is larger, or combine 2 levels if they are smaller.

L3 - 10
L4 - 6
L6 - 8
L7 - 5
L8 - 2

XS - 6
XG - 14
XP - 4
XD - 1

Our team has fewer than 5 gymnasts per level and the groups are the biggest in the upper levels. Not sure what the max per team is and if they are equipped to take on more girls.

I don't know what the max number of gymnasts is at each level. Being a small team, they probably don't have the issue of "no room at the next level".

We vary year to year. No limits on the numbers per level.
This season (competing gymnasts only):
L2 - 14 L3 - 16 L4 - 2 L5 - 1 L8 - 2 XG - 8 XP - 8

2023-24:
L2 - 21 L3 - 9 L4 - 7 L5 - 1 L7 - 4 L8 - 3 XG - 4 XP - 5

2022-23:
L2 - 11 L3 - 8 L4 - 6 L5 - 1 L6 - 3 L7 - 6 L8 - 4 XG - 10 XP - 4

2021-22:
L2 - 10 L3 - 9 L4 - 6 L6 - 8 L7 - 5 L8 - 4 XG - 10 XP - 2

Definitely depends on the year here. No limits, and sometimes we have kids come up in the middle of the season from pre-team.

This year:
25 XS - 12 XG - 6 XP - 8 XD - 5 XSA
15 L3 - 10 L4 - 3 L5 - 10 L6 - 3 L7 - 4 L8 - 6 L9 - 3 L10

Last year:
15 XS, 17 XG, 6 XP, 0 XD, 1 XSA
9 L3 - 5 L4 - 8 L5 - 6 L6 - 4 L7 - 8 L8 - 2 L9 - 5 L10

In our experience, the size of the training group doesn't matter as much as the style of the coach(es). Our current gym has 2 coaches for levels 6 - 8 (about 25 girls) and they event split, so one coach handles beam/floor and the other does bars/vault. The team is split and they rotate, doing drill and progression stations while taking turns on the actual apparatus. It works very well in my opinion - little "waiting" in line but gives ample opportunity to continue to work while waiting for spotting or time with the coaches.
