Good Morning All,

DD's gym is having team tryouts next weekend they have posted a list of skills that are needed to tryout - DD has all but one (i think) it's a vaulting skill I believe is handspring front fall to resi mat (or something like that)

She knows she doesn't quite have and not sure if she wants to tryout (she's will be 7 next week)

I am not going to push but do you think it would be a good experience for her to just try out? She's doing camp all summer and may get the skill over the summer.

I don't want to waste the coaches time but I assume there will be other kids there too probably at her same level.

If I remember correct they are looking for these skills:

Back Handspring (with light spot)
Handstand Bridge
Bridge Kick-over
Round Off Rebound
Cartwheel or Handstand on high beam (choice)
Back Hip Circle
Springboard Hand spring fall to resi mat (something like that)

Thanks!

Michelle

Why not?

sounds like some level 4 skills, and then they will probably work on getting the rest over the summer...except for the cartwheel on beam...level 4's don't have to do that to compete...but they do have to do a handstand and a side handstand twist dismount(on beam). the vault is a handstand flatback. Sure, I'd have her tryout if she wants to. They may be looking for kids with the right work ethic and determination to be able to train and get these skills. If she has the will, they will be able to coach her.

I bet she makes it.:)

Does she know what the vaulting test is and know she can't do it? If she can do a back handspring with a light spot, I am guessing she can't be too far from the vaulting skill you are describing which sounds like a handstand flatback. They may want them to do this from a run and jump off a board (a bit harder) but it may be as simple as just doing a handstand with a tight body and then falling over tight (for a kid with a good handstand and awareness, pretty easy). They may be working on the one from a run but at the testing let them do an easier version or go with spot.

So basically, if it was suggested that she attend this tryout and she has the other skills listed, I wouldn't assume she can't do this or shouldn't attend because she can't do it. Even if she cannot completely perform it without help, they will evaluate the other components of her vaulting, like her running speed, handstand form, etc in order to tell how she'll progress over the summer. I would just explain this to her and explain that they will just be looking at her skills and it is okay if they are not all perfect, they want to just look to see where she is now.
