you're not following thru with your arms. you must whip/stretch the arms just like you do for your back handspring...but with your hands off the ground. a good measurement is shoulder height from the floor on the whip. when you stop the arms to soon you will end up piking.

Step 1.......Try working it from both directions, as a high back handspring, and as a low layout. See which one gets you closest to the results you're looking for.

Step 2.......Take a moment to think about your posture/shape as you finish skills like round-off and back handsprings. Are you snapping down to a piked position with all of your bending concentrated at your hips. I've found a lot of problems aren't caused by doing a new skill incorrectly as much as having many similar body movements being done incorrectly. For lack of a gymnastics "shapes" key board......if you are tumbling<<<<<direction your snap down need to be shaped more like a C or a tilted ( . To make that happen you need to tighten up your abs and tuck your bum under hard. So practicing snap downs from a round-off or a back handspring might help.

Step 3.......Try working round-off back handsprings onto a slightly raised mat with your hands landing on the slightly raised mat. You have to finish your snapdown on the round-off very consistenly and very close to the slightly raised mat to do this drill safely. So ask your coach for some feedback on the drill before you do it. The risk is that your hands might land on the edge of the mat if your snap down prior to the handspring is not in the right spot, and if you hurt your fingers or wrists.......well you just really may need to have a whipback in your tumbling bag of tricks

. Add another layer of matting as you become comfortable with this drill.

One last concern.....Make sure you can always tell the difference between the "set" for your backward "flight" tumbling skills.

do round off handspring handspring handspring.
Then do round off handspring, whip, handspring.
Alternate and keep the arms in mind like Dunno said. :)
