I ask because our current gym is complaining that people are just leaving without discussing intentions to trial or view elsewhere. So just wondering if this was common practice, seems it is, haha. I don’t know how on earth it would go down doing things any other way!
I might discuss any (fixable) issues you are having with the gym, but not that you are looking elsewhere.

I think this depends on why you are leaving. If it's something that can be addressed then I think it would be fair to have a discussion in advance and then do a trial if it can't be addressed. That way the departure also shouldn't come as a surprise to the gym.
In a sane and perfect world yes, this would be a nice approach. The reality is too many have been burned by trying to do the ‘right’ thing. The only situation where is let the gym know in advance is if the gym change is due to a family relocation.

In my opinion, if you are leaving any situation that could be emotionally charged, including a sports team, a job, a significant volunteer project etc. don’t give them a clue until you have your next opportunity locked down. Sign any contracts with the new group and check that your eyes are dotted and t’s are crossed before telling and then give minimal notice (for a job) or notify them after you have completed your ( or your child’s) last workout, unless you are moving more than an hour away. Leaving yourself open to being persuaded, manipulated or berated does not help you at all. I know, I’m cynical but I’m also cautious.
