So, our gym had an open gym last night (they hold one on the first Saturday of every month), and there weren't too many people there so us parents got to do some skills if we wanted to. I did some stuff on beam--dd taught me the level 4 routine--man that is hard to remember all that stuff!! LOL. I can still do my full turn, but found out from the coach that it is a "reverse turn" and not the normal turn that the gymnasts do. I am one of those backwards people that cartwheels right and twists left so I am all messed up and backwards! I did do the level 4 vault--and pretty good my dd and her friends say . They were probably just being nice but hey--I at least got a "Good job!" from them!! Heehee!

I also did some cartwheels and handstands on floor. Got to do some handstand contests--Dani won those all 5 times!!! BUT, I did come in 2nd in the headstand contest :D--Dani won that as well . LOL It was sooo much fun :D, but I am SOOOO SORE today!! I was so thirsty and tired after that 2 hours--dd said "Well, now you know how I feel after one of my practices!!" She is sooo right!!! Man, it is amazing what these kids do and I definitely have a newfound respect for them.

My New Years resolution is to get in shape and take some sort of exercise class--I think I am going to look into yoga. It is the most like gymnastics without all the pounding and scary skills.

Do any other parents work out regularly and what type of workouts do you do? Just curious as to what our gym mommies and daddies do to keep up with their gymmies!

Hey, you did more than I could do!
And what--no bars for you??

Thanks!! I did do a little bars--had jeans on and a sweater and it kept getting caught up on the bar. Soooo THAT"S why gymnasts wear leotards!!! LOL

LOL me either! I was at a family gathering last summer and all the kids were doing cartwheels and such.. my younger cousins (early 20's) were joining in.. so I, of course, couldnt let them show me up. Off I go... yikes.. I could hardly walk for a week!

Sometimes we break out in handstands and the odd cartwheel. Beam is way too scary, don't mind the floor beam though and I can do a full turn on that one. On bars I can do a pullover and a hip circle, but no way on earth would I try a sqaut on! I have no flexibility any more, gave up ypga a few years back for cardio stuff and things have gone downhill since then!

Usually I snowshoe and cross counrty ski in winter and walk in summer. For the last 4 years I have been doing cardio box, which I love, but in September they stopped the course and I have been struggling to find something new within 30 minutes drive of here. Need something though as I can feel the lack of muscle work.

Hope you took some video MD, that way you'll be prepared for the challenge in October!

Wow

You did awesome!!! I never took gymnastics as a child. I can do a cartwheel, but it is awful and my girls laugh!!! :) Great job!!!!

Workout=my daughters coaches are personal trainers. I have met several times with one coach to work out. I am off my game since Oct. We all had the swine flu and I havent' been able to get rid of a lingering cough. But I plan to start back ASAP.

I use light weights and do several different types of sets to work arms and back, push ups, sit ups, and hip lift things. I run/walk three days a week. Watch what I eat etc. It all helps. And her coaches designed it so I won't have to go to a gym to do it. Who has time when I am always at the gymnastics gym with my girls??

Hope that helps. Minimal equipment required-hand weights, and big ball! :)

Thanks guys! Bog--sorry no video, but maybe next time :). CoachTodd--my dd's coach sprained her wrist spotting a cheerleader--that's funny that you mentioned that!

I have decided to start taking Bikram Yoga--my first class is tonight!! So excited! I used to take yoga a few years ago so I can't wait to get back into it!

I'm 21 and playing around in the gym leaves me in pain. Whenever my gymnasts ask me to demonstrate something I just cringe at the pain it will inflict or the fact I could very well make a fool out of myself. Tumbling is okay, but demonstrating beam is always a challenge and on bars I can only manage up to about level 5 skills, maybe a few level 6. And boy do I feel those skills the next day! Even spotting can leave me sore.
The skills go fast when you are out of the gym completely and age starts creeping up on you, but I'm impressed at all you can still do. I can't imagine doing all of that after having kids considering it's tough now. One of the coaches I work with is in his late 20s and can throw triple backs, full ins, all kinds of fun stuff on the trampoline and complains about age. I would have loved to be able to do that stuff at my peak! I guess it's all relative haha.
Good for you on taking up yoga, I really need to get involved in something to keep my flexibility. Sometimes my gymnasts ask me to do conditioning or oversplits with them  and I need to be able to keep up!
And I'll bet Dani is proud of you! My mom would not attempt anything in the gym beyond walking across the beam I had at home.
