Off Topic What do they have on their waist/back between events?

We watched the USA Gymnastics Championships and saw that some of the athletes had this black, thick waistband with a big knob in the front with little red spots on the back. We tried taking a picture of it, but we weren't fast enough. Anyone know what they are?
