So my DD (8) is currently on the Excel pathway for gymnastics but she's having issues with her back handspring on beam. She always seems to jump back and look over her left shoulder instead of looking straight, which causes her hand placement to be completely off and makes it that much harder to land. Has anyone got any advice on what could be going wrong and how to fix it? I've attached two video for reference which shows the problem clearly even though she's not on a beam in one

Is her back walk over the same way

I have seen it in her walkover before but no where near as much and it doesn’t affect it because she goes slow so can correct hands on the bend down if needed.

In walkovers her left arm touches slightly early because she’s leaning a bit more that way, but it doesn’t really affect her hand placement if she’s slow enough - but if she rushes it then it will

Is it worse on beam? If so, it might be a mental thing. Try to get her to be as tight as possible and to square her hips. It might also help to pretend that she is in between two walls, although that mostly helps with going crooked. Has her back handspring always been like this?

It’s actually the same on beam as on floor, I think she’s built up this bad habit now which is not great. Yeah as far as I can remember she’s always reached around the side, I think it’s been there since she learnt it and it was never corrected so it’s just stuck 🤦🏽‍♀️

It's definitely something with her hand placement. Like you said, it's probably just a habit by now. I would bring it up to her coaches if you haven't already, and perhaps this summer they could try to re teach it with proper hand placement. She's young enough where it wouldn't harm her to re learn the back handspring with proper technique. If she's not competing it this year, I would have her stop doing it completely until the summer, so that she can try to break the habit.
