Hi -- I'm trying to figure out a better way to teach my beginner girls how to do standing dive rolls. I've tried a few different techniques: explaining the mechanics, demonstrating, using towels/pillowcases for them to dive over, etc., but truthfully watching them do the skill is painful even...
Quick Question
I have a question for Angela (or anyone else who knows) -- what are "hammer handstands" and what are "needle kicks"? Could you give me a little description? Thanks! Angela.
Hi -- I'm going to be coaching an adult women's class this summer and I would like to start every class with a good cardio warm up. But I'm not sure what exactly that should entail. Does anyone have any ideas? I would greatly appreciate any feedback you have to offer. Thank you...
We have a double mini at our gym and the kids seem to like it and we have kids as young as six using it -- I think it's helpful if you stress the safety issue of "not jumping on the red parts" to the kids, but other than that they should be fine. I have to warn you though -- learning how many...
I am going to be starting an adult women's apparatus class at my gym and I've decided to offer it twice a week for two hours each class. I have over a month to plan how I'm going to organize it and coach it; what I want to focus on and I want the women to get the most that they can out of these...
Does anyone have any ideas for helping beginners to "get" their handstand forward rolls? Most of my beginning gymnasts hate doing them and I try to think of different ways to SHOW and TELL them what to do and I've been trying different stations during our floor time such as walking their feet...
another idea for shoulder flexiblilty
One thing I've found that helps is if you take two five pound hand weights, have the gymnast hold one in each hand, then have him/her lay backwards over an octagon with their arms up all the way over their head right by their ears. Feet stay on the floor...
Hi everyone -- I have a young girl who just cannot quite get her front hip circle on bars. I've run out of things to tell her and I'm not helping her improve because I say the same things over and over. I was wondering if anyone has certain words or corrections they use to help explain to a...
I'm coaching a girl who is working on her half-on,half-off vault. Her form is ok, but when her hands connect with the vaulting table they always seem to hit one at a time so she doesn't get a good block. She knows she's doing this and I'm trying to explain to her about how to get her hands to...
never too old
dear pinkcrystal -- I don't think anyone is ever too old to be in the gym. You might not be able to do elite level tricks, but you'll have lots of fun. I think with proper conditioning, flexibilty and strength training, and lots of repititions..... there shouldn't be a problem...
Does anyone know anything about what Dominique Moceanu is doing right now and if she is still planning to return to the elite scene? The last time I knew anything she was planning her comeback, but they wouldn't let her compete in the national championships for some weird reason. I'd really...
