Thanks for all the intel! I will double check that we are getting the 3-inch inseam, and I will also just tell my gymnast that she will keep growing. :)
My 6yo daughter would like a pair of Nike Pro shorts to protect her hips on bars. I ordered the size corresponding to the kids size chart, but the shorts seem to be pretty long. This is fine with me (nothing wrong with modesty!) but she says they “don’t look right” (I.e., how they do on the big...
This suggestion is seasonal, of course, but at my 6yo daughter’s team practice during the holiday season they had an “elf on the shelf.” This particular elf was gymnastics-savvy and was always watching for straight legs, pointed toes, and listening to the coaches’ instructions the first time...
To be fair, it was just that she was too old to begin the DP track at that particular gym. And in retrospect I’m really glad they told me, bc otherwise she would have stuck around in rec for another year other hoping to make a DP team for which she’d already been ruled out!! Having the info...
Depending on your specific location & traffic patterns, you might also consider Beyond Gymnnastics in Burlington, MA. Their team starts at L1 so the transition from rec to team might be quicker than for gyms that start at L3, if her dream is to join the team! :)
If you want to switch her to DP/JO I agree now is the perfect time of year to check out other gyms! I was told at my daughter’s first gym that at 5yo she was too old to be considered for pre-team, but might be considered for Xcel Bronze at some point in the future (no guarantees, lol!). A few...
My daughter turned 6yo at the end of last summer — just in time to attend a “mini camp” (3 days, 2 nights) at IGC in Pennsylvania and loved it!! I would highly recommend for that age. We have also done privates here and there for skills that have been tricky for her (pullover, back handspring)...
I agree the HW requirements for young kids are getting out of control. We meet my first grader’s nightly reading requirement in part by reading audiobooks on our drive to and from gymnastics. She still practices reading at home but not every night. And the audiobooks allow her to engage with...
My 6yo daughter's coach wants her to stretch her splits at home. She's nearly there, but doesn't always get all the way down. Also, sometimes her hips aren't all the way square or her back leg is bent, which lets her get down but only by cheating! 🤣 Her "pancake" stretch is 180 degrees and flat...
Yes, that is really helpful to have a coach perspective. Maybe I could let her do the gymnastics camp for a week or two, but later in the summer after she is used to the longer practices!
It’s not 100% set, but is looking likely, that my 6yo daughter will move up to level 3 this summer. The practices will be 3 hours each on 3 afternoons per week (vs. 3 days of 1.5h that she’s doing now). I am a working parent, so will need to arrange for day camp during the day before practice...
My 6yo L1 daughter similarly had a couple of tricky practices when she transitioned from rec to team. She at first interpreted the corrections as criticisms, and felt defensive, even when the corrections were being given in a super-encouraging "you've got this!" kind of way. (In one practice she...
