Names of different types of mats?

I keep seeing various types of mats named here - panel mat, sting mat, resi, cheese and so on - and would like somebody to please explain what they all are. We have lots of different types of mats in our gym but I've never heard anyone, even the coaches, call them by these names. Maybe our...

    mats ON the beam?

Just curious, but how common is it to use mats on the beam? do you/your gymnasts use mats on the beam? if not, why not? What skills do they use it on? do they become attached to it when they cant use it at competition? what type of mat do they use? We are allowed to use mats at our gym. most of...

Training tumbling, use of mats/tumbletrak/other training aids

Bit of a spinoff from another thread: when teaching lower-level tumbling (ie anything between a forward roll and a backhandspring), to what extent do you use training aids such as wedge mats, tumbletrak, barrels, etc? With kids small enough to be spotted, I'm finding more and more that I...

Coaches Handspring Flatback Vault onto 90cm mats

Hi - I was wondering if I could have confirmation of possible causes of lack of heel drive when kids are completing the handspring flatback vault onto 90cm mats. This seems to be a bit of a problem for a few of my kids at the moment. I'm figuring this could be caused by one or a combination of...

    Dead mat tumbling help?

Hey, so I'm a college cheerleader and I'm shooting for my layout on dead mat (no springs). On a spring floor I can throw fulls easily, but I used to muscle alot of my tumbling and while it sorta works on a spring floor, a dead mat of course its near impossible. I've recently began really...

    making your own mat

We acquired two "twin" sized memory foam type mats that were used as a mattress. Each one is probably 5 inches thick. Right now, Bella is using each one as a mat for her low beam. We have animals so unless I cover them, then are going to get nasty with hair and going to do so pretty quickly...

    Fixing mats

We have a new gym with lots of hand me down, old equipment. Some of our mats are actually falling apart. Is there a way to repair mats? We've got stuffing coming out!

Front Handspring Vault- next step after flat back on stacked mats?

Hi everyone, I coach rec gymnastics and have most of my girls succesfully doing handstand flatbacks on the vaulting table. Some of them are ready to move onto the next step. What can I use as a drill for front handspring vaults before taking away all the stacked mats (and making it a true...

The line on the vault mat?

In the world champs vault final, the commentators noticed that the flag for out-of-bounds- was going up even when the gymnast was still in those train track lines. I was wondering if the red line going down the center of the mats has anything to do with the flag going up?

Parents She ate the beam and some mats for lunch.

 dd bit it big time on beam today! I took dd to her preschool class this morning. She was having a blast and playing and just being a kid in the gym. This is why I love that she gets to do preschool class as well as her team training. During their time on beam, dd did all of the...

could someone explain what the lines are for on the L4 mat stack?

I am sure the line on the mat stack must mean something but I have no Idea what it is? I asked DD and she didn't know. Are they supposed to be over the line, not over the line and what is the deduction if they aren't?

    Mat Drills?

I teach gymnastics at a summer camp. It's not a "gymnastics camp", just a day camp that has gymnastics. The camp is run like a school day with 8 45 minute periods. Throughout the day I see kids ranging in age from 3-14. I normally just run a big circuit to let them play on all the equipment...

    Colors of mats

We are purchasing some new mats for our facility. We are selecting colors for the various panel mats and I have a quick question. Does anyone know if the vaulting mat for level 4 is required to be a certain color? We have a red resi-pit but wondered if the mat must be blue for competition. Thanks!

    Coaches Sliding mats?

We are a fairly new gym and therefore all of our equipment is new. I am having a problem with the mats sliding. For example if I put a panel mat on top of another mat it always slides. I have tried a couple of kitchen type grippers to see if that works but they still slide. Any ideas?

    Mat Repairs?

Does anyone have any suggestions for repairing 2" folding mats? I'm running a small recreational program at the school in town here and the mats are old and getting worn. The corners are wearing through and the folds are starting to tear. I know I've been to clubs that have done patch jobs on...
