I am at the stage of getting my gymnasts to learn a kip series of for example 3 kips in a row - ready to put a kip after a clear hip circle.
Any help would be greatly appreciated please. From how it should be done and positions to drills to get it right etc...
Many thanks
I apologize if this should have gone in the "Coaches" section, but it wouldn't let me post there. I am going to start teaching at our gym. I will just be the basic early rec/preschool classes. I will do quite a bit of training with one of the owners and I have good understanding of basic...
I would love to hear some other coach's opinions on this...
As a gymnast and in the gyms I've worked in, we have always taught fulls after the gymnast has a nice, solid layout on their own. My issue is that in the last 3 months I've gotten several students that came from another gym, & they've...
There is another thread on here that is very similar to my question (motivation in a 5 yr old) - but I didn't want to high-jack that thread as I think - but I did read it and took some thoughts from it.
Some background:
My dd is a late starter - she is started a rec class at age 8 about 1.5...
Yes? No? This is a pre-emptive post because I haven't tried yet either, but I don't really understand how this skill will work most effectively. I guess I gather that it is going to be bent arm and the kid wants their hands placed kind of behind their head (yes? no? when I do a back extension my...
Hello, My name is Michelle...and I just picked up a couple of toddlers classes. Basically ages 2/12 to 4, and I need some new creative activities to keep their attention and to broaden the base of their gymnastics career. I could use any suggestions as far as lesson plans go!
Hi. I was wondering how many of you teach your gymnasts how to fall properly - both rec and competitive. I was also wondering what you teach them. I vaguely remember from a coaching course almost 10 years ago to teach the gymnasts to land as flat as possible to disperse the force (obviously...
Quick background--I coach a group of preteam kids, mainly levels 1 and 2. Our gym policy is that kids cannot move up to the next level until they have all the skills for that level--no exceptions. Our level 1's practice 1.5 hours/week and our level 2s practice 3 hrs/week.
The biggest skill...
I am going to start helping at first then maybe teaching pre-school gymnastics. It is a 45 minute class and she needs the helps due to the number of kids and the fact that they are getting out of control. My job will be more to police them then to teach them at first. How do you go about that? I...
Just wondering how I can teach my daughter (she is a 6 yr old, level 3) to do a pike hold. I think it will help her with many of her skills because she could use some help in the strength area. Not sure where to start.
I'm a coach and have a level 8 gymnast who needs to upgrade her SV on Floor.
How do I correctly teach the below leaps please:
1 - Split leap with full turn
2 - Switch leap with 1/2 turn (in flight)
Thank you :)
I have a question for coaches. When you are teaching gymnasts to do the front handspring vault (ones who haven't done it before), how do you set the vault table? Would you start them on a low table, have them perfect the vault on that and then move it up? Would you have them learn the vault...

I'm currently coaching a group of level 4/5s and most of them are yet to learn a backhandspring. Those who can do them themselves are quite sloppy and I just feel like I keep repeating the same corrections over and over again. I'm not sure if they just aren't looking/thinking about what I tell...
Today a family who's daughter I teach in a rec class introduced me to their older daughter, who is in love with the idea of the sport, and they're signing her up for private lessons.
I am totally down with this, and excited, but a bit nervous. This child is enthusiastic, funny, thrilled to bits...
I came across this video of "TagTeaching" and thought it was interesting but have never heard of it before. Is this teaching technique common and useful?

Hello everyone! My name is Nicole and I'm new to the Chalk Bucket. I joined mainly to get some opinions about how to teach backhandsprings. I was a level 10 gymnast years and years ago and I always learned them with a full arm swing -- up, down past your bottom, and back up again. But the...
I have just started teaching an acro class and 3 of the girls want to learn back handsprings. I coach rec gymnastics but i have never taught or spot (besides girls who know what they're doing) a back handspring before.
Two of the girls are definitely ready to learn back handsprings. One girl...
Up until now, I've always considered a Tsuk to be a very important step in the development of upper-level vaults. When a kid is ready to move on to something harder than a handspring, a tsuk is generally the first choice (or perhaps I should say the progression towards an eventual tsuk is...
My daughter is trying a developmental 4 team at a new gym. I have two older daughters who have already competed level 4, and I am studying to become a judge. The coach is teaching the girls the level 4 floor routine, and there are two parts in the routine that she is teaching them that are...
