Compositional deductions are not hidden. There are standard ones for all levels 8-10, then there are specific compositional deductions for each level 8-10. They are not hidden, there is a chart in the COP very specifically outlining the deductions. I dearly hope they are not going to be coming off the start value, as that add a whole other level to calculating the start value for us judges. I don't see how subtracting compositional deductions from the start value is beneficial or necessary.
I don't think they meant the composition deductions are literally hidden. I think they meant that with the comp deductions being added to the start value, the coaches will be able to better understand and "see" if their gymnasts get comp deductions or not. I actually think doing this is a good idea. While it may be a pain, it'll keep judges accountable for actually taking comp deductions. I've heard some judges don't even bother with composition while judging...

Can someone with experience with the scope of changes that usually occur chime in? Since next year level determinations are occurring now would these changes have significant impact on that?
If they were to make major changes, this is when they'd do it.

Usually when there are big changes coming, rumors leak out, and I haven't heard anything major.

While there may be tweaks here and there, it is unlikely that there will be dramatic changes that actually affect the difficulty of any particular level in a meaningful way.

New code (or at least a draft of it missing the skill illustrations) is available for purchase by members: https://members.usagym.org/app/publicationCatalog.html

(I don't have it yet; on general principle, I refuse to pay for it myself, preferring to let whatever gym I'm at cover it; however, I'm currently between gyms, so I haven't gotten a look at it yet)

Okay...I bought it. I just started skimming, but the main differences I see thus far are:
  • Level 6 floor now requires two tumbling passes: each with directly connected flight-elements and a different salto (or 2nd pass option: isolated B salto) - I was hoping for this change as I thought the floor requirements for level 6 were way too easy.
  • Level 8 routines meeting all special requirements and with required value parts now start from a 9.8 with 0.2 in “composition credit” added to start value
  • Level 9 routines meeting all special requirements and with required value parts now start from a 9.5 with 0.3 in bonus and 0.2 in “composition credit” added to start value
  • Level 10 routines meeting all special requirements and with required value parts now start from a 9.2 with 0.5 in bonus and 0.3 in “composition credit” added to start value
  • For bars, composition credit includes “difficulty of elements” and “difficulty of dismount"
  • For beam, composition credit includes “difficulty of acro elements” and “difficulty of dismount”
  • For floor, composition credit includes “difficulty of saltos” and “difficulty of dance elements"
  • The other composition deductions remain more or less (haven’t looked that carefully yet) unchanged as deductions

I'm happy with the level 8 beam start value changes. I saw so much sandbagging this season with high scoring watered down beam routines with cart wheel roundoffs for their acro series.
The end score should be the same, my understanding is that the composition requirements aren't new, they just are additions instead of deductions. A clean routine with an easier series can and will still score well.

(I'm curious to see what the actual CC are)

Have they published the details on the composition credit requirements yet? Or is it all mostly the same as before just as a credit now instead of deduction?

Yes, it’s published. It’s mostly the same as before: minor differences and clarifications with the things I listed above part of the “composition credit” added to start value and other stuff (lack of a dance series on BB, failure to tumble/acro both fwd/sideways and backward on BB and FX, ext.) still deductions.

In theory, one would think so, but the deductions must not have been actually happening consistently, otherwise why the need for the change to make it glaringly clear what is up to level.

Can anyone explain in parent level terms with the new COP what a level 7 bar, beam and floor routine can look like? I would appreciate it if you could give examples of actual skills instead of A or Bs. Thank you!!

I'll save a nuanced answer until I have a chance to actually look at the new rules; right now all I have to go on is what's being said here and in other coaching groups.

But with that said, In practical terms as far as skill choice and routine composition, seems like not much really changes for L7. Whatever routine you would have done under the old rules, the same routine will score within a tenth or two of the same under the new rules. Bars routines will likely be completely identical to what they were under the old rules. Floor and beam routines need minor tweaks, slightly more difficult dance, but nothing too radical.

But I'll revisit when I can actually get my hands on the new rules.
