So my daughter is 5 now (started when she was 3) and is still not able to do a cartwheel or a handstand. She is great at bars and can almost do a pull-over and excels on vault (well all they’ve done is run and jump or dive rolls, I guess without being able to do a handstand she won’t get past that). Partly I feel like she could get her cartwheel and handstand if she had someone actually paying attention and helping (she needs to learn to kick into her handstand and cartwheel instead of putting her hands down first and then trying to kick). She did a trial class where she was the only kid there that class and the teacher helping her to learn that. She was almost there a month ago and has regressed. She wants to do it right and she loves gymnastics and wants to go every day if she could, so I want her to succeed, even if she isn’t the most talented gymnast. I don’t want to be that pushy mom though but I feel like having some one on one time with a coach will really make a difference. Should I sign her up for some privates to work on them or just give her more time?

you’re probably right. I just see her getting upset that the other kids can do it. I’ve to explain that she’s younger than some of those kids but that doesn’t seem to help. Maybe it will just click one day 🤷‍♀️

It's great that she loves gymnastics just keep doing rec classes and she'll figure it, or she will find something else to love and that's fine too.

My daughter went into a development squad at three, because she was strong, weirdly focussed, and amazing at following directions. And I reckon she learned as much in the six months between five and a half and six as she did in the two and a bit years between three and five and a half. She enjoyed herself, but her progress was slooooooow. A lot of three and four olds just aren’t ready to learn fast yet.

Handstands are something she can practice at home though - kicking up against a wall, or to your hands.
