My daughter’s bar routine starts with two glide swings (the gymnast regrips between glides). I’m confused about how a glide shows “full extension”. My daughter is short enough that she could fully extend with a straight body but her coach makes her hold her body in a dish shape (pic attached). It’s harder on the abs and harder to show full extension. Anyone have any thoughts here? My daughter would rather do it in a straight line without the dish shape.

I am attaching a screenshot from USA Gymnastics showing the line drawing for a glide + return to stand. You’ll see in the drawing how the gymnasts’ bottom is squeezed a little more and the hips are “flatter.”

I don’t know what program your daughter competes in (maybe U.K. becuase you said dish shape?). If I was judging your daughter, I *might* take 0.05 for lack of full extension and I might not. I’d encourage you to just trust the coach and trust the process, this is so minor.

Dish shape going through the bottom is correct. Her position in that pic is pretty near perfect; if I were to pick nits, I'd say she could get her hips slightly more extended, but that's already a better glide shape than a lot of what I see at low levels.

Sounds to me like her coach is doing everything right.
